Vietnamese lychee exports reached an impressive milestone in July, surging to $35 million, a 20-fold increase compared to the previous year’s figures.
China remains the largest consumer, accounting for 71% of the total value at $57 million. Demanding markets such as the Netherlands, Australia, France, the US, and the UK also witnessed significant growth.
The remarkable performance of Vietnamese lychees can be attributed to reduced farmgate prices and abundant yields. Additionally, the expansion of VietGAP and GlobalGAP-certified farming areas has enabled the fruit to meet the stringent import standards of Japan, the US, and the EU.
In international markets, Vietnamese lychees retail for approximately $8.8 to $13.3 per kg. Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen, Secretary-General of the Vietnam Vegetable and Fruit Association, attributed the enhanced quality to modern preservation technologies that extend the fruit’s freshness. He also highlighted the proactive efforts of enterprises in establishing production-consumption chains, which have boosted productivity and ensured consistent quality.
This year, for the first time, fresh Vietnamese lychees are available in Costco, the largest retailer in North America, with over 635 stores across the US and Canada. Previously, Vietnamese lychees were only sporadically present in select chains like Safeway. Gaining access to Costco is considered a significant step forward, introducing this summer specialty to a global retail channel.
The Vietnam Trade Office in San Francisco has expressed its commitment to supporting businesses in expanding their portfolio and facilitating the entry of various other strong agricultural products into the US market.
According to the Plant Protection Department, the 2025 crop is expected to yield 303,000 tons of lychees, a 30% increase compared to 2024, with Bac Giang alone contributing 165,000 tons.
