The story of giving every citizen a gift of VND 100,000 to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution and National Day on September 2nd has been on everyone’s lips in early September. Tens of millions of people experienced digital public services for the first time, linking their bank accounts with social security on VNeID.

This topic was also enthusiastically discussed at the seminar “Opportunities to Soar with Digital Transformation: Pioneering Stories from the VNeID Application and the Finance-Banking Sector” on September 9th. From this story and the successes in the digital transformation of the banking industry, experts, and leaders in banking and business have envisioned a prosperous digital nation of E-Vietnam.

TPBank was one of the pioneering banks accompanying the government in the program to gift VND 100,000 on the National Day, and even offered an additional VND 100,000 to citizens who successfully linked their social security accounts on VNeID with TPBank accounts.

According to CEO Nguyen Hung, this is not a business program but an expression of gratitude on a special occasion. “We have no intention of doing business with this program. On the National Day, the bank just wants to send a small extra gift to our customers,” he shared. He also said that the large number of registered customers shows the strong influence of this program.

Mr. Hung also shared that Vietnam now possesses a huge payment system through banks. While previously the number of bank account holders was limited, now up to 86% of adults have bank accounts, facilitating swift implementation.

Notably, all payment transactions are currently operating on a free mechanism for the people. “In fact, few countries offer completely free transactions like Vietnam. While in Europe and America, transaction fees are quite high. This is a great effort by the entire banking industry: maintaining a huge payment system, free for people, even without direct profit from this activity,” said Mr. Hung.

Developing strong digital channels – where banks are not limited in serving customers in terms of space and time.

Choosing the right trend in the face of challenges

According to Mr. Hung, most of TPBank’s customers now conduct transactions through digital channels, with a rate of up to 98%. The number of customers has exceeded 14 million, placing TPBank among the banks with the largest customer base in Vietnam.

Remarkably, before becoming one of the leading banks in digitalization, TPBank was once a weak bank that had to undergo mandatory restructuring. In 2011, TPBank ranked last in the ranking of Vietnamese commercial banks. It has been a challenging journey to rise from that position to the group of the top 10-12 banks today.

Mr. Nguyen Hung shared that if TPBank had only competed according to the traditional model with banks that had gone before, it would have had almost no chance, especially when the state limited the opening of new branches. Therefore, since the restructuring, the bank’s management has chosen the only path: to develop strong digital channels – where banks are not limited in serving customers in terms of space and time.

“It can be said that necessity is the mother of invention. Faced with challenges, TPBank had a unique choice, and that choice was in line with the trend,” Mr. Hung remarked.

Thanks to this strategy, despite having a limited number of physical branches, TPBank has attracted a large number of customers. The bank pioneered the implementation of the 24/7 automatic branch model nationwide, which was permitted for testing by the State Bank of Vietnam. To date, there have been about 400-500 LiveBank automatic transaction points effectively replacing traditional branches. This is a significant turning point, saving costs and providing convenient experiences for customers.

From E-Bank to the Aspiration of E-Vietnam

Not stopping at being a digital bank, TPBank aims to contribute to building E-Vietnam. VNeID and the national population database help ensure eKYC accuracy, prevent fraud, and promote cashless payments.

Mr. Nguyen Hung believes that E-Vietnam is not a distant vision but can become a reality within this decade. He affirms that the determination to reform by the Party and the Government has created a foundation for the nation to break through. VNeID is clear evidence of the practical benefits of digitalization.

Especially, TPBank’s CEO emphasizes: “After all, the real needs of the people are the key factor in the success of digital transformation. It is these small but practical daily benefits that will form usage habits, gradually spreading into significant changes.”
