On September 17th, a report by Tien Phong newspaper revealed that the Mental Health Specialty Hospital, a 300-bed facility with a total investment of nearly 250 billion VND, located in Phu Chanh Ward (formerly Tan Uyen Town, now Binh Duong Ward, Ho Chi Minh City), has been abandoned and left unused.
Previously, in mid-2013, the hospital project was approved and commenced by the People’s Committee of the former Binh Duong Province.
By 2018, the hospital project was completed but has remained unused since then.
Due to prolonged abandonment, the facility has deteriorated, with many areas showing severe cracks and rusted elevator systems.
The completed facility has been abandoned for the past 8 years.
Years of abandonment have led to significant deterioration of the facility.
A representative from the Department of Health of the former Binh Duong Province stated that upon completion, during the inspection for acceptance, the investor (Binh Duong General Hospital) discovered several items not implemented as per the original design. Additionally, completed items did not meet requirements, preventing handover.
Previously, the People’s Committee of the former Binh Duong Province issued a directive assigning Binh Duong General Hospital to take over the facility for its Mental Health Department. However, due to unresolved issues regarding the completion and renovation of missing items such as auxiliary structures and medical equipment, the hospital has not yet accepted the handover.
In 2021, during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic in Binh Duong, the hospital was requisitioned as a treatment facility for severe and critical patients on the third floor. After the pandemic subsided, the hospital was once again abandoned.
The hospital is strategically located on four road fronts, designed with one main gate and two auxiliary gates.
A representative from the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health stated that after the merger of Binh Duong into Ho Chi Minh City, the health sector has developed a plan to utilize the facility as the fourth branch of Ho Chi Minh City Mental Health Hospital. Before putting it into use, relevant authorities will conduct necessary repairs due to its prolonged abandonment and deteriorating condition.
