“Forgotten” Expressway Service Road: Mỹ Thuận – Cần Thơ Highway

The Mỹ Thuận - Cần Thơ Expressway segment passing through Vĩnh Long has been operational, yet only one side features a service road for local residents, leaving the other side without. As a result, several households have abandoned their farmland, unable to access it with machinery for cultivation.

Voters in Vinh Long province have petitioned the Ministry of Construction to consider investing in the remaining civilian access road along the My Thuan – Can Tho Expressway, specifically the section passing through My Thuan commune.

According to the voters, only one side of this section currently has a civilian access road, leaving the other side without one. As a result, some households have abandoned their farmland due to the inability to bring in machinery for cultivation.

In response to the voters, the Ministry of Construction stated that Phase 1 of the My Thuan – Can Tho Expressway project was completed and put into operation at the end of December 2023. The ministry has reviewed and allocated 1,000 billion VND from the medium-term public investment plan for 2021-2025 to initiate investment procedures for the additional Vo Van Kiet road interchange.

The Ministry of Construction has also directed the My Thuan Project Management Board and design consultants to review and update local proposals regarding the addition of access roads (excluding the specific section requested by the voters), drainage ditches, and drainage systems. These improvements aim to ensure that the completed infrastructure meets the travel and production needs of the local population.

According to the My Thuan Project Management Board, the section from Ong Bay Bridge to Khoan Tiet Bridge has already been equipped with an access road system along the route (on the right side). Adding a civilian access road on the left side, as requested by the voters, would incur additional costs, exceeding the project’s total investment limit, and thus has not been implemented.

“The Ministry of Construction acknowledges the voters’ proposals and will instruct the My Thuan Project Management Board to review and balance the funding to consider adding this to the project if funds are available. If funding cannot be balanced, the Ministry of Construction requests the Delegation of National Assembly Deputies of Vinh Long Province to advise the People’s Committee of Vinh Long Province to proactively invest in this component using local funds,” the Ministry of Construction stated.
