On September 18, Vietnam Air Traffic Management Corporation (VATM) announced that, following Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh’s directive, the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) collaborated with VATM, Air Traffic Management Technical Company (ATTECH), and Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) to conduct calibration flight inspections at Long Thanh International Airport. The inspection period is expected to last nearly one month.
A mandatory step before Long Thanh Airport’s operational launch
Previously, the flight evaluation of navigation procedures in late July and early August was successfully completed, paving the way for this subsequent calibration phase. According to the Prime Minister’s conclusion, the primary goal of Phase 1 of the Long Thanh Airport project is to achieve substantial completion by December 19, ensuring compliance with standards for the official inauguration.
In this context, operational teams at the Ho Chi Minh City Area Control Center and Tan Son Nhat Airport Approach Control Area closely coordinated for the navigation procedure inspection flight on August 2, 2025.
The calibration flights aim to assess the accuracy, integrity, and reliability of air navigation equipment systems, adhering to International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards. Additionally, this process will review and evaluate the suitability of newly established flight procedures at Long Thanh Airport.
Calibration flights scheduled from September 26 to October 24
As per the flight plan approved by the Operations Department, calibration flights will take place from September 26 to October 24, 2025. The Beechcraft KingAir 300 series, a specialized aircraft favored globally for calibration tasks due to its agility, stability, and ability to meet stringent technical requirements, will be utilized.
During this phase, ATTECH will calibrate critical systems at Long Thanh Airport, including two Instrument Landing System/Distance Measuring Equipment (ILS/DME) units, one Very High Frequency Omnidirectional Range/Distance Measuring Equipment (VOR/DME) unit, one airport lighting system, Radar and Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) surveillance systems, and associated flight procedures.
ATTECH, a VATM subsidiary, will directly oversee the organization and execution of the calibration flights. The team comprises seasoned ATTECH experts and specialists from the Czech Republic’s Air Navigation Institute, operating under flight permit No. 3792/TC-QC. The involvement of international experts ensures objectivity and enhances the credibility of the entire evaluation process.
According to ATTECH, calibration flights will primarily occur at night, during dawn, and throughout the day. The aircraft will depart from Tan Son Nhat Airport, conduct multiple test flights in the Long Thanh Airport airspace, and return to land at Tan Son Nhat Airport.
