In an interview with Nikkei, FPT Chairman Truong Gia Binh shared plans to establish a chip testing facility in Da Nang “in the near future.”
While foreign companies like Intel already operate back-end chip manufacturing plants in Vietnam, no domestic firm has yet ventured into this domain.
Back-end chip manufacturing involves wafer dicing, packaging, assembly, and testing of the final product. This phase is considered less technically challenging than the front-end process, which involves etching microelectronic circuits onto the wafer.
“We are in the process of obtaining permits for chip testing and constructing a semiconductor facility, aiming to commence operations soon,” stated Truong Gia Binh, without specifying a timeline.
FPT entered the semiconductor sector in 2022. Currently, the company relies on overseas factories to manufacture its self-designed chips. This dependence on foreign suppliers exposes their production system to geopolitical fluctuations and market supply-demand shifts, prompting the corporation to establish its own manufacturing base.
Da Nang was chosen for its advantageous talent pool compared to Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City. The city boasts 19 universities with approximately 100,000 students. On March 27th, FPT inaugurated its first high-tech and semiconductor R&D center at Da Nang Software Park 2.
Numerous domestic and international companies are expanding their presence in Da Nang to tap into its abundant workforce. Over the past two years, the number of chip-related companies in the city has tripled to 25. Additionally, Da Nang hosts over 40 companies specializing in artificial intelligence (AI). Major US firms like Synopsys and Marvell Technology have already established a presence here. A local official revealed that other American giants such as Nvidia, Intel, and Qualcomm are also exploring investment opportunities.
FPT operates a network of universities nationwide, including in Da Nang. “With over 60,000 students, our academic programs are gradually shifting from Information Technology to advanced fields like semiconductors and AI,” said Binh. In March, FPT launched a chip R&D center in Da Nang to attract top talent.
