On September 16th, the Dong Nai Provincial Project Management Board submitted a report to the Provincial People’s Committee regarding the survey and research proposal for investment, renovation, dredging, and expansion of the Buong River. The aim is to enhance its water drainage capacity, thereby minimizing flooding in residential areas along the riverbanks.

Hundreds of households near the Buong River affected by flooding
Following a survey of the Buong River and hydrological and hydraulic calculations, the Project Management Board and consulting units proposed an investment plan for the renovation, dredging, and expansion of the river. This plan specifically targets areas where residential flooding is prevalent, particularly in Phuoc Tan Ward.
The proposed plan includes the construction and expansion of the Buong River in several segments: from Km 63+700 to Km 70+590 (over 6.9 km), from Km 63+700 to Km 68+000 (4.3 km), and from Km 68+000 to Km 70+590 (nearly 2.6 km).
Additionally, the plan involves the construction and renovation of the Ba Buom Canal, including new construction from Km 65+650 of the Buong River to Ba Buom Bridge (700 meters), new construction from Ba Buom Bridge to the existing canal (over 1.1 km), and renovation of the existing canal (over 1.1 km).
According to the Project Management Board, the total investment for this project is estimated at over 4.3 trillion VND.
The Buong River, approximately 83 km long, originates in Long Khanh Ward and merges with the Ben Go River before flowing into the Dong Nai River. It serves as a critical drainage system for an area of about 40,000 hectares across various locations in Dong Nai, including Long Khanh, Trang Bom, Phuoc Tan, Tam Phuoc, and Long Hung.
Beyond its drainage function, the Buong River also provides irrigation water and holds potential for tourism development in its upper reaches. Due to the region’s topography, land cover, and the elevation of residential areas, flooding primarily occurs from Trang Bom District to the lower reaches near the Dong Nai River. The most severe flooding is concentrated in Phuoc Tan Ward, Bien Hoa City, where the situation is worsening.
Considering Resettlement for Residents in the Flood-Prone Areas of Bùi and Tích Rivers
For effective flood prevention and control in the Bui River basin, Hanoi mandates that relevant authorities develop comprehensive solutions. Households residing in areas prone to frequent flooding or within the riverbeds will be considered for relocation to facilitate the expansion of the Bui and Tich river channels, enhancing flood drainage capabilities.
