Japan Bridge Escapes Congestion After Separating Car and Motorcycle Lanes

Following the installation of rigid lane dividers by Hanoi's Department of Construction, traffic flow on Nhat Tan Bridge has significantly improved. After just three days, the separation of car and motorcycle lanes has resulted in smoother, safer travel for all commuters.

Starting September 16th, Hanoi’s Department of Construction installed two gantry frames and barriers on Nhat Tan Bridge to separate car and motorcycle lanes heading towards Noi Bai Airport. The bridge’s four mixed lanes in each direction have been reconfigured into three car lanes and one motorcycle lane, separated by iron barriers.

Motorcycles and bicycles are designated to the outermost lane on the bridge, with a maximum speed limit of 40 km/h. The remaining lanes are for cars, with the lane closest to the central divider allowing speeds up to 90 km/h, and other lanes capped at 80 km/h.

The surface of Nhat Tan Bridge has been marked with lane dividers and speed limit indicators.

Motorcycles accessing Nhat Tan Bridge are directed into lane 4, adjacent to the bridge railing, via iron barriers, instead of using all four lanes as previously allowed.

According to VTC News reporters, by the morning of September 19th, residents had adapted to the new fixed lane barriers, resulting in smoother traffic flow on Nhat Tan Bridge, with no congestion reported compared to previous days.

Currently, the installation of lane barriers from Vo Chi Cong to Dong Anh is nearly complete. In the opposite direction, from Dong Anh to the city center, approximately 2/3 of the bridge’s length has been fitted with barriers.

Fixed iron barriers will not be installed at the expansion joints of Nhat Tan Bridge.

Unlike the improved traffic conditions on Nhat Tan Bridge, Vo Chi Cong Road has experienced frequent localized congestion, particularly during peak hours, since the installation of rigid lane dividers.

The central divider causes vehicle conflicts along a 1 km stretch from UDIC WestLake Residences to the intersection with Nguyen Hoang Ton Street.

Motorcycles are gridlocked on Vo Chi Cong Road.

Prolonged congestion on this route has forced many motorcyclists to use car lanes.
