If implemented, this will be the first dedicated bike lane in Ho Chi Minh City.

Over 14 Billion VND for a Dedicated Bike Lane

Speaking with PLO, a representative from the Ho Chi Minh City Urban Traffic Management Center revealed that they are in the process of selecting a contractor for the project to renovate and organize a priority bike lane on Mai Chí Thọ Street, from Nguyễn Cơ Thạch Street to D1 Street.

According to the design, the bike lane will be 5,780 meters long and 2 meters wide, with a maximum design speed of 20 km/h. The total investment is expected to exceed 14 billion VND, funded by the regular maintenance budget.

The lane will be renovated from the existing land of Mai Chí Thọ Street, featuring an asphalt concrete structure with a clear separating coat between the bike lane and motorized vehicle lanes, ensuring safety and easy identification.

Additionally, the project includes the arrangement of bike parking areas and stations at convenient locations near residential areas to enhance accessibility and encourage the use of this eco-friendly mode of transportation.

Ho Chi Minh City is set to launch a priority bike lane.

Ho Chi Minh City also aims to develop a public bicycle network to efficiently connect with other passenger transport modes such as buses, river buses, and the metro.

From now until 2030, the city plans to deploy a minimum of 8,000 public bicycles in the central area, alongside measures to restrict private vehicles. In the initial phase, approximately 5,000 bikes will be placed in key areas such as Thu Duc University Village, Thu Thiem Urban Area, and along major metro lines.

Notably, the entire public bicycle system will be socialized, without using state budget funds.

International Experience

According to the Emissions Control Scheme for Vehicles in Ho Chi Minh City, London (UK) has implemented 8,500 Park-and-Ride spaces to support traffic around the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ), while also improving cycling infrastructure.

Similarly, Antwerp (Belgium) promotes public transport, walking, and cycling within its low-emission zone.

Seoul (South Korea) has restructured roads to prioritize non-motorized traffic within its low-emission zone. Lisbon (Portugal), Rome (Italy), Haifa (Israel), Brussels (Belgium), and Shenzhen (China) have also implemented similar strategies, integrating various support solutions when deploying low-emission zones.

Learning from the success of these cities, the scheme emphasizes that Ho Chi Minh City should consider allocating lanes on roads with sidewalks wider than 3 meters exclusively for bicycles. Additionally, expanding services to areas like the former Thu Duc University Village, urban areas in the former District 2, and along metro stations is recommended.

In reality, back in 2022, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport (now the Department of Construction) planned to open a dedicated bike lane from Rạch Chiếc Bridge to Saigon Bridge on Hanoi Highway, using the land between the main road and the parallel road of the Hanoi Highway.

This land is part of the project to enhance greenery along Hanoi Highway and Metro Line No. 1 (Bến Thành – Suối Tiên).

By 2023, the Department of Transport planned to submit a pilot scheme for dedicated bike lanes on high-demand roads to the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee.

In 2024, Ho Chi Minh City continued to plan for a priority bike lane on Mai Chí Thọ Street.
