In overnight trading ending early this morning, September 20th (Vietnam time), coffee prices plummeted. Robusta coffee futures on the London exchange dropped by 6.86% to 7.07%, while Arabica coffee futures on the New York exchange fell by 4.07% to 4.28%, depending on the contract month.

Coffee Prices Plunge Over $300/Ton in a Single Night

Specifically, the benchmark November 2025 Robusta contract lost $305/ton, closing at $4,142/ton. The December 2025 Arabica contract shed $340/ton, settling at $8,050/ton.

Despite the sharp decline at the close, the downward trend wasn’t clear-cut. Prices briefly surged by triple digits during the session, resulting in a volatile trading range exceeding $400/ton.

Compared to the previous week, the November 2025 Robusta contract has lost $459/ton, a 10% decline. The December 2025 Arabica contract has fallen by $700/ton, an 8% drop.

Today’s domestic coffee market is expected to open significantly lower, reflecting the overnight losses on the London exchange, which closed below $116,400/ton.

This volatility comes just as Vietnam’s coffee harvest begins, causing unease among farmers. However, experts emphasize that price prediction is impossible. Farmers are advised to focus on sustainable practices and cost reduction to ensure profitability.

Vietnam Loses Top Coffee Supplier Position to Laos in Thailand

According to a report by the Import-Export Department of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Vietnam’s coffee market share in Thailand has shrunk significantly in the first seven months of 2025, while Laos and Indonesia have gained ground.

In the first seven months of 2024, Vietnamese coffee held a 67% market share in Thailand. This year, that share has plummeted to just 26%.

During this period, Thailand imported 5,630 tons of coffee from Vietnam, valued at $30.14 million, representing a 76.1% decline in volume and a 63.1% drop in value compared to the same period in 2024.

Meanwhile, Laos has overtaken Vietnam as Thailand’s top coffee supplier, exporting 11,100 tons valued at $38.3 million. This represents a 12.5% increase in volume and a 14.7% rise in value compared to 2024.

Laos’ market share in Thailand’s coffee imports has surged from 28% to 51% during this period.
