Vietnam Airlines, the national flag carrier of Vietnam, has recently issued a preliminary invitation for bids on a project to acquire new wide-body aircraft. The airline plans to add 30 wide-body aircraft, specifically the Airbus A350-900 or Boeing B787-9 models, with deliveries expected between 2028 and 2032. Prospective partners are requested to submit details regarding quantity, type, delivery schedule, and contract value by October 8th.
The airline is open to exploring all viable options, including both leasing and purchasing. In the case of new purchases, the total investment could exceed $10 billion for the 30 aircraft and engines, excluding potential discounts for bulk orders.

Currently, Vietnam Airlines operates a fleet of 102 aircraft, including 31 wide-body planes (14 Airbus A350-900s and 17 Boeing 787s), 65 narrow-body aircraft (A320, A321), and 6 ATR-72s. The wide-body fleet is considered the backbone of the airline’s strategy for operating long-haul international routes.
This fleet expansion plan is part of the airline’s long-term roadmap. Previously, in late April, the Vietnamese government approved Vietnam Airlines’ proposal to invest in an additional 50 narrow-body aircraft, with an estimated total value of approximately $4.2 billion. By 2035, the airline aims to have 52 wide-body and 112 narrow-body aircraft to meet growing transportation demands, expand its route network, and enhance competitiveness in the market.
Vietnam Airlines currently operates a network of 21 domestic and 29 international destinations, with an average of 400 daily departures. In 2025 alone, the airline launched and restored 15 international routes to key markets such as Italy, Russia, China, the UAE, Japan, South Korea, and India. These initiatives aim to diversify the network, strengthen its position in the Asia-Pacific region, and gradually expand into Europe and the Middle East.
