Ookla, the company behind the Speedtest tool, has released its Global Internet Index report for August 2025. The report analyzes and evaluates internet performance and speeds across various countries.

According to Speedtest’s findings, the global average fixed broadband speed is 104.43 Mbps for downloads and 56.59 Mbps for uploads. Mobile internet speeds average 90.69 Mbps for downloads and 13.06 Mbps for uploads.

Vietnam’s internet speeds, both fixed and mobile, have shown significant improvement recently.

In August, Vietnam’s fixed broadband achieved an average download speed of 261.80 Mbps and an upload speed of 237.66 Mbps, ranking 10th globally—a 3-position jump. This marks Vietnam’s first entry into the top 10 and its highest median speed since joining the global internet in 1997.

These results align with iSpeed’s measurements, developed by the Vietnam Internet Network Information Center (VNNIC), which recorded a fixed broadband speed of 271.2 Mbps in August 2025.

Within Southeast Asia, Vietnam’s fixed broadband speed ranks third, behind Singapore and Thailand.

Mobile internet speeds in Vietnam also rose by 3 positions in August, reaching 16th globally for average download speeds. Current mobile speeds average 152.17 Mbps for downloads and 33.32 Mbps for uploads.

Experts attribute this growth to several factors. The commercialization of 5G since late 2024 has significantly boosted mobile internet speeds.

Government policies, including the National Digital Infrastructure Strategy, aim to achieve nationwide 5G coverage, enhance undersea cable capacity, and promote 5G adoption.

Additionally, telecom companies have invested in undersea and terrestrial fiber-optic infrastructure and upgraded domestic connectivity networks.

Notably, in the Speedtest Awards for the first half of 2025, a Vietnamese telecom provider was recognized among the world’s fastest networks.

Viettel ranked third in the Fastest Mobile Network category, encompassing 3G, 4G, and 5G, surpassing Singapore’s Singtel. VinaPhone secured second place in the Fastest 5G Network category, just behind a UAE provider.

Vietnam’s Politburo aims to establish a world-class digital infrastructure by 2030, featuring ultra-high capacity and bandwidth comparable to advanced nations.

The Telecommunications Department’s 2025 report reveals that Vietnam’s fixed broadband subscriptions reached 24.4 per 100 inhabitants, a 3.9% increase. Fiber-optic household penetration rose to 85.3%, surpassing the global average of 60%.
