To commemorate the 1st Congress of the Can Tho City Party Committee for the 2025-2030 term, the People’s Committee of Can Tho City organized the groundbreaking and inauguration of 18 key projects with a total investment of over 12,000 billion VND. This includes 8 groundbreaking projects and 10 inauguration projects.

Notable among these is the groundbreaking of the National Highway 91 upgrade and expansion project (first 7km), the Green Urban Development project in Nga Bay adapting to climate change, and various social infrastructure projects such as schools, hospitals, cultural centers, and social housing. These initiatives aim to transform Can Tho’s urban landscape.

Specifically, the National Highway 91 upgrade and expansion project plays a crucial role in connecting the city center with inter-regional routes in the Mekong Delta.

According to the Project Management Unit for Traffic and Agricultural Construction Investment in Can Tho, the National Highway 91 upgrade and expansion project (from Km0 to Km7) spans approximately 7.04km. It starts at the intersection of Cach Mang Thang Tam – Hung Vuong – Tran Phu – Nguyen Trai streets and ends at the Km7 marker on National Highway 91, connecting with the Km7+00 to Km14+000 section currently in use.

The road has a cross-section width of 37m, including 6 lanes (23m wide), a 4m median, and 5m sidewalks on each side. The project includes the Binh Thuy Bridge, with a main span of 145m and 456m of approach roads on both ends, constructed permanently with reinforced concrete.

Additional infrastructure includes stormwater drainage, utility trenches, greenery, lighting, and traffic safety features.

This urban road project is classified as Grade I with a design speed of 60 km/h. The total investment is 7,238 billion VND, funded by the central and local budgets, and is scheduled for completion between 2023 and 2027.

According to the new administrative boundaries, the project passes through Cai Khe, Binh Thuy, and Thoi An Dong wards. Most affected households are in Binh Thuy and Cai Khe wards.

Binh Thuy Ward has 760 affected cases, including 723 from the new project and 37 from the National Highway 91 expansion (from the bus station intersection to Tra Noc). Compensation records for 723 cases have been completed, and land recovery notices have been issued for 578 cases.

Cai Khe Ward has 283 affected cases. Of these, 121 cases have been surveyed and recorded, 106 have been approved by the compensation council, 45 have received compensation, and 20 have voluntarily handed over land.

The National Highway 91 upgrade and expansion project officially began on September 22.

The National Highway 91 upgrade and expansion project (Km0-Km7) aims to enhance the efficiency of this route through Can Tho, particularly connecting the Tra Noc port and industrial zone, and Can Tho Airport with neighboring areas.

During a recent meeting with project stakeholders, Mr. Truong Canh Tuyen, Deputy Secretary of the Can Tho City Party Committee, emphasized the project’s importance as a key city initiative. Its completion will boost economic and social development and stimulate the local real estate market.

Additionally, Can Tho recently received approval to extend the Western Ring Road from National Highway 91 (Thoi Long Ward) to National Highway 80 (Vinh Trinh Commune). This 17km project is expected to start in 2025-2030 with an investment of over 8,000 billion VND.

The new section will connect with the 19.3km Western Ring Road under construction, creating a regional transport axis linking Can Tho with neighboring provinces and Cai Cui Port (Nam Song Hau Road). The initial design includes a 22m wide road (2 lanes, 11m each), with an 80m foundation for future expansion. The route features 6 intersections, a design speed of 80km/h, and an interchange with the Lo Te – Rach Soi Expressway.

This critical transport project will complete the Western Ring Road, enhance regional connectivity, and link Can Tho with neighboring provinces. It will integrate with expressways, national highways, airports, and seaports, fostering cooperation and socio-economic development in Can Tho and the Mekong Delta.

In November 2022, Can Tho began construction on the 19.3km Western Ring Road segment with a budget of nearly 4,000 billion VND, currently 36% complete.

Recently, Can Tho has accelerated strategic infrastructure development, focusing on urgent and key projects.

The city is addressing challenges in procedures, land clearance, and material supply for projects such as the North-South Eastern Expressway (Can Tho – Hau Giang section), Chau Doc – Can Tho – Soc Trang Expressway, Can Tho Western Ring Road, Nam Song Hau Road, Soc Trang East-West Economic Development Axis, and Soc Trang City Ring Roads I and II.

Additionally, investment proposals are being finalized for overpasses at Intersection No. 1 (Mau Than – 3 Thang 2 – Tran Hung Dao) and Intersection No. 4 (Nguyen Van Linh – Ba Thang Hai).

The Ho Chi Minh City – Can Tho railway project is in the pre-feasibility study phase, expected to complete in 2025. This 8km project will connect key economic regions, enhancing competitiveness and socio-economic development. It spans six provinces: Binh Duong, Ho Chi Minh City, Long An, Tien Giang, Vinh Long, and Can Tho, starting at An Binh Station in Di An (now Ho Chi Minh City) and ending at Can Tho Station in Cai Rang District.

Transport infrastructure is vital for the Mekong Delta’s development. Can Tho is maximizing resources for road, waterway, port, and future rail projects to enhance connectivity with the region and Ho Chi Minh City. These efforts will drive breakthrough growth for Can Tho and the Mekong Delta.
