Recently, billionaire Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao, Chairwoman of Vietjet, visited the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), the largest and oldest financial center in the world.
This visit followed a historic event in Seattle, where Vietjet received its first Boeing 737 aircraft as part of a $32 billion contract for 200 planes. This marks the largest aviation deal between Vietnam and the United States. The handover ceremony was witnessed by President Luong Cuong, who was attending the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) High-Level General Debate and engaging in bilateral activities in the U.S.

During her visit, Thao was warmly welcomed by NYSE Chairwoman Lynn Martin. She discussed the robust growth of Vietnam’s capital market over the past 30 years, highlighting listed companies on the Ho Chi Minh City Stock Exchange (HOSE), including Vietjet and HDBank.
The billionaire expressed her ambition to propel Vietnamese businesses onto the global stage, aiming for a presence on the world’s largest stock exchange in New York. This move would expand international capital raising channels and solidify Vietnam’s position on the global financial map.
“We are eager to fly to the U.S. and explore capital raising opportunities on the New York market, the world’s largest stock exchange,” emphasized Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao. “This aspiration is not only shared by Vietjet and HDBank but also by many Vietnamese enterprises striving for global integration.”
Currently, both Vietjet and HDBank are part of the VN30 index, delivering sustainable value to domestic and international investors. With a global vision and a sustainable development strategy, learning from and eventually raising capital on the NYSE, a symbol of global financial power, is a crucial milestone in establishing Vietnamese businesses on the international stage.
Notably, during her NYSE visit, Thao participated in the closing bell ceremony at 4:00 PM. The U.S. stock market surged by 48 points at the close, marking a memorable day.
Thao’s visit to the NYSE not only opens new avenues for Vietjet, HDBank, and other Vietnamese companies but also showcases Vietnam’s dynamism, integration, and aspirations in the era of globalization.

NYSE boasts a market capitalization of nearly $29 trillion
Currently, the NYSE oversees approximately 2,400 listed companies, with a combined market capitalization of nearly $29 trillion.
After listening to Thao’s insights, Lynn Martin, the second female chair in the NYSE’s over 300-year history, shared the exchange’s evolution. She affirmed her commitment to supporting Vietnamese businesses, including Vietjet and HDBank, in exploring opportunities within the New York capital market.
Established in 1792, the NYSE’s bell-ringing tradition is not merely ceremonial but crucial for ensuring no trades occur before the opening (9:30 AM) or after the closing (4:00 PM).
Since 1995, the NYSE has welcomed distinguished guests to ring the closing bell, a duty previously held by the exchange manager.
