After over 10 months of rapid construction, the Phong Châu Bridge (Phú Thọ) is now in its final stages. The construction team is dismantling equipment and preparing for the inauguration ceremony scheduled for late September.

Key components such as the structure, bridge surface, railings, and lighting are complete. Asphalt paving, lane markings, expansion joints, and drainage systems are being finalized before September 25.

A year ago, the old Phong Châu Bridge collapsed due to Typhoon Yagi, resulting in 8 fatalities and missing persons. The new bridge will fulfill the long-awaited expectations of residents on both sides of the Red River and restore the interrupted National Highway 32C.

The new Phong Châu Bridge connects Phùng Nguyên and Vạn Xuân communes (Phú Thọ), spanning 653 meters in length and 20.5 meters in width. It features 4 vehicle lanes with a prestressed concrete girder structure. The project, managed by the Thăng Long Project Management Board (Ministry of Construction), has a total investment of over 635 billion VND, with construction by Corps 12 of the Truong Son Construction Corporation.

Lieutenant Colonel Trần Đăng Tuấn, Project Site Commander, stated, “The Phong Châu Bridge is 99.9% complete, with only minor adjustments like median barriers and bridge surface finishing remaining. The team is working diligently to complete these tasks by September 25, followed by site cleanup. Preparations for the inauguration ceremony on September 28 are also underway in Lâm Thao.”

Regarding traffic management at both ends, Lieutenant Colonel Tuấn noted that while initial measures are in place, they are currently temporary. Local authorities and road management agencies will continue monitoring and making adjustments, especially at the complex Tam Nông intersection. Post-inauguration, specialized units will oversee and refine traffic organization.

Lieutenant Colonel Trần Đăng Tuấn highlighted the unwavering commitment of the entire team from the outset. The project operated continuously with 3 shifts and 4 teams to expedite completion, finishing in just 9 months—3 months ahead of the 12-month contract schedule.

Throughout construction, the team worked tirelessly without breaks, dedicating all resources to the project. Despite challenges like material shortages and price fluctuations, the project remained on schedule and met quality standards.

“Residents on both riverbanks are eagerly awaiting the inauguration, and the construction team is deeply moved. Having been involved from the beginning, we are honored to contribute to the Phong Châu Bridge—a project of great significance to the local community and beyond,” shared Lieutenant Colonel Trần Đăng Tuấn.

Workers are rushing to complete the final tasks.

The construction team is inspecting and adjusting the rigid median barriers.

The team of engineers and workers maintained a 3-shift, 4-team schedule, working through holidays and Tet.

The bridge railings are intricately designed with motifs inspired by the Hùng Temple gates, a cultural symbol of Phú Thọ Province.

Mrs. Nguyễn Thị Kiên (70 years old) drove her car to view the new Phong Châu Bridge. She shared, “I used to cross the old bridge frequently, but after it collapsed, we had to take a long detour. I thought the new bridge would take years to build, but thanks to the military’s involvement, it was completed in less than a year. We are truly grateful and overjoyed that the government has taken care of us.”

Mr. Nguyễn Xuân Tưởng (from Cẩm Khê commune) remarked, “The Phong Châu Bridge is vital as a key route for residents on both riverbanks. We eagerly awaited its completion for easier travel. Previously, the ferry operated on a schedule and depended on water levels, often forcing me to take a 40km detour. Now, seeing the swiftly built, modern, and high-quality bridge, we are truly delighted.”

Mr. Nguyễn Cao Trường (33 years old, from Vạn Xuân commune) shared, “My home is near the bridge, and every evening, many residents gather to watch, creating an excited and lively atmosphere. People on both sides of the bridge eagerly await its completion. During the construction period, trade between the two riverbanks was challenging. Now, the Phong Châu Bridge will facilitate agricultural product sales, especially vegetables, boosting the local economy.”

The Phong Châu Bridge project began under special circumstances following the collapse that disrupted a vital transportation route. It symbolizes the resilience and rapid reconstruction efforts of authorities and residents. The military played a crucial role, notably Brigade 249 (Engineering Corps) operating the ferry and Corps 12 as the main contractor.

On September 28, the Phong Châu Bridge spanning the Red River will be inaugurated and opened to traffic, marking a significant milestone in restoring this vital transportation route and fulfilling the community’s expectations.
