Police raid uncovers counterfeit salt factory in India’s Nuh district.

Nuh district police (India) have dismantled a factory producing and distributing counterfeit salt under the guise of a renowned brand. Six suspects, including factory workers, have been arrested.

Investigations reveal the facility, located on the Punhana–Jamalgarh route, had been secretly operating for three years, selling counterfeit salt worth crores of rupees. Monthly, the factory released approximately 5,000 kg of fake salt, distributed to local markets and grocery stores in Nuh.

The initial tip-off came from Speed Search and Security Networks Pvt Ltd, a legitimate firm authorized to protect the brand of a major salt manufacturer. Upon detecting irregularities, the company filed a complaint with the police.

Counterfeit salt packets seized during the raid.

Nikhil Thakur, field manager of Speed Search and Security Networks’ legal team, stated that field agents discovered numerous counterfeit salt packets widely available. Shockingly, lab tests revealed the salt was unrefined and actually intended for preserving animal carcasses to slow decomposition.

“The counterfeiters sold the fake salt for just 17 rupees per pack (approximately $0.20), despite its actual value being around 4 rupees ($0.05). Our genuine product retails for 28 rupees ($0.34). This aggressive pricing allowed the counterfeit product to rapidly dominate the market. They also exploited consumer fears in certain Nuh villages to expand their operations,” Thakur explained.

The company’s team surveyed at least 20 stores in Punhana, confiscating numerous suspected counterfeit salt packets.

Upon receiving the complaint, Nuh police raided the factory and six grocery stores along Jamalgarh Road. Authorities seized hundreds of counterfeit salt packets bearing the famous brand, along with packaging materials and production equipment. Notably, investigators also discovered large quantities of counterfeit detergent from other major brands stored at the factory.

“The factory owner has been identified and is being pursued by authorities. He supplied the counterfeit salt to multiple store owners, who knowingly sold the substandard product,” stated Narender Bijarniya, Nuh Police Chief.

The investigation is ongoing. Authorities warn this case highlights the dangers of food counterfeiting, which poses direct health risks to consumers.
