During the regular press conference held by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the afternoon of September 25th, in response to a journalist’s inquiry regarding Vietnam’s reaction to the U.S. refusal to recognize the equivalence of 12 Vietnamese seafood harvesting professions, Spokesperson Pham Thu Hang stated:

On September 15th, Vietnam’s Minister of Industry and Trade, Nguyen Hong Dien, sent a letter to the U.S. Secretary of Commerce, urging the U.S. Department of Commerce and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to reconsider their decision. This decision, which denies the equivalence of 12 Vietnamese seafood harvesting professions under the U.S. Marine Mammal Protection Act, could severely disrupt bilateral trade and jeopardize the livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese fishermen and workers.

Over the past period, under the guidance of the Government and with the collaboration of local authorities, Vietnam’s seafood industry has made significant efforts to modernize, enhance accountability, and strengthen fisheries management.

Moving forward, based on the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Vietnam and the United States, Vietnam stands ready to engage in discussions with the U.S. to resolve outstanding issues. The goal is to continue fostering fair and sustainable bilateral trade cooperation, ensuring the legitimate interests of fishermen and businesses in both countries, the Spokesperson emphasized.
