Vietnamese consumers are increasingly opting for high-clearance, versatile vehicles (SUVs/Crossovers) due to their superior performance on challenging terrains compared to low-clearance cars. Additionally, these vehicles offer spacious interiors, ample cargo capacity, and elevated seating positions for enhanced visibility.

According to the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (VAMA), a total of 61,628 SUVs/Crossovers were sold in the first eight months of 2025, marking a slight 1.6% increase from the same period last year.

VinFast VF 3 and VF 5 are the top-selling urban high-clearance vehicles since the beginning of 2025.

SUVs/Crossovers dominate the market, accounting for over 50% of VAMA members’ total passenger car sales (121,627 units). Outside the association, VinFast, with its predominantly SUV/Crossover lineup, leads in sales. Similarly, two-thirds of Hyundai’s best-selling models are high-clearance vehicles.

This trend underscores the growing preference for SUVs/Crossovers in Vietnam, surpassing other segments like sedans and MPVs.

In terms of individual model sales, VinFast’s urban electric trio—VF 3 (28,704 units), VF 5 (27,109 units), and VF 6 (12,492 units)—tops the chart.

Among gasoline-powered SUVs/Crossovers, the Mazda CX-5 leads with 9,995 units sold in the first eight months of 2025, a 35% increase year-over-year.

The Mazda CX-5 has long been the top-selling gasoline SUV.

The Toyota Yaris Cross follows in fifth place with 7,691 units delivered, making it the best-selling B-segment gasoline SUV in 2025 to date and Toyota Vietnam’s flagship model, surpassing the Vios.

The Ford Everest, the only body-on-frame SUV in the top-selling list, ranks sixth with 7,276 units sold in the first eight months. This represents a 17% increase (1,000 more units) compared to the same period last year, solidifying its leadership in the D-segment SUV category.

The Ford Territory, Everest’s sibling model, also performed well with 7,036 units sold, a 65% year-over-year increase. This growth was fueled by pre-facelift price reductions, positioning the Territory as a strong contender against the Mazda CX-5 in the C-segment gasoline SUV market.

Before the 2025 facelift, the Ford Territory briefly outsold the Mazda CX-5 in a single month.

Other top 10 models include the Mitsubishi Xforce (6,660 units, -18%), Toyota Corolla Cross (5,177 units, +58%), and VinFast VF 7 (5,099 units).

Additional notable urban high-clearance vehicles with strong sales include the Hyundai Tucson (4,958 units), Hyundai Creta (4,147 units), Honda CR-V (3,670 units), and Kia Seltos (3,516 units).

Overall, SUVs and crossovers remain the top choice for domestic consumers, as evidenced by their market share and consistent presence in monthly sales rankings.

Responding to this trend, automakers are introducing new high-clearance models and upgrades. Notable 2025 arrivals in Vietnam include the Skoda Kodiaq, Honda HR-V Hybrid, Hyundai Creta, Skoda Kushaq, BMW X3, Audi Q6 e-tron, Ford Territory, Mustang Mach-E, Kia Sorento, and several Chinese models.
