Vietnam Social Security Issues Urgent Alert

The Vietnam Social Security (VSS) has officially debunked the rumor claiming that "from 2026, health insurance will no longer cover severe illnesses or surgeries." This misinformation is entirely false, and citizens can rest assured that their healthcare benefits remain fully intact, guaranteeing uninterrupted access to medical examination and treatment services.

On September 26th, Vietnam Social Security (VSS) addressed a circulating rumor claiming, “Starting in 2026, health insurance will no longer cover severe illnesses or surgeries.” This misinformation has caused widespread concern among the public.

VSS has categorically denied this claim, labeling it as fake news. The newly enacted 2024 Health Insurance Law, effective from July 1, 2025, aims to expand coverage and enhance benefits for policyholders, particularly for critical illnesses and high-cost treatments.

The false rumor about 2026 health insurance changes has sparked anxiety among many.

VSS urges the public to remain vigilant against such misinformation and refrain from sharing unverified content. For accurate information on health insurance policies, individuals are advised to consult official VSS channels or contact their local VSS office.

According to VSS, policyholders are entitled to 80%-100% coverage of medical examination and treatment costs, as per their insurance benefits.

Vulnerable groups, including children under 6, the poor, near-poor, and ethnic minorities, receive state-funded support for health insurance participation.

The health insurance fund covers over 10,000 technical services, including advanced procedures like cardiovascular surgery, organ transplants, MRI, CT, and PET-CT scans, as well as 1,037 active pharmaceutical ingredients with thousands of formulations, including high-cost drugs for cancer and other severe conditions.

From 2020 to August 2025, the health insurance fund has reimbursed over 33 trillion VND for 41,188 patients, with individual claims ranging from 500 million to over 2 billion VND. A notable case involved a patient from Vinh Long province who received nearly 28 billion VND in treatment coverage for conditions such as hereditary factor VIII deficiency, acute pharyngitis, and non-specific abdominal injuries.
