Building UAVs Without Chinese Components is Challenging

On September 27th, during the 85th Entrepreneur Coffee program organized by the Ho Chi Minh City Business Association (HUBA) under the theme “Entrepreneurs Aspiring to Rise,” Mr. Tran Kim Chung, Chairman of CT Group, discussed the project to export UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) for transportation to South Korea.

Chairman Chung emphasized that investment in science and technology never follows the “Saint Giong” narrative—suddenly becoming gigantic. Success requires long-term accumulation in science and technology, research, human resources, capital, and domestic and international relationships.

Mr. Chung noted that CT Group has long invested in science and technology, announcing in 2022 its focus on UAVs, semiconductors, artificial intelligence (AI), biotechnology, and more.

The challenge lies in Vietnam’s lack of a true technology ecosystem. For instance, building a UAV without Chinese components is difficult because Vietnam lacks a supporting industry. Under these conditions, CT Group must research, develop, and handle everything independently, requiring extensive preparation time.

Why Can Vietnamese Enterprises Export UAVs to South Korea?

“Many ask how we can export large UAVs to a challenging market like South Korea—a high-tech market with strong national pride. However, we’ve demonstrated our ability to optimize production. Unlike Samsung, which took years to establish manufacturing bases in Vietnam for global exports, we’re already set up. Our South Korean partners can use their brand to distribute globally, significantly faster,” explained Chairman Chung.

He also highlighted the risks of investing in science and technology due to rapid technological changes. Insufficient investment fails to capture the market, while excessive investment risks being obsoleted by new technologies overnight. “No one knows which technology will replace ours tomorrow,” he observed.

Regarding the 5,000 UAVs for export, Mr. Chung stated that they are undergoing testing at South Korea’s largest airport. The trials have shown that Vietnamese UAVs perform excellently in South Korean skies.

These UAVs will continue test flights until they meet the required flight hours for official certification and handover.
