Statistics from the Customs Department reveal that as of July this year, Vietnam’s coconut exports have generated over 306 million USD. Compared to the same period last year, coconut exports surged by 40%.
Notably, the United States spent approximately 82 million USD on importing this refreshing fruit from Vietnam, doubling the figure from the same period last year and surpassing China to become the top importer of Vietnamese coconuts for the first time.
In July alone, the U.S. imported Vietnamese coconuts worth more than 14 million USD, a 2.4-fold increase compared to the same month in 2024.
Meanwhile, China, traditionally Vietnam’s largest coconut buyer, saw its import value reach nearly 67 million USD in the first seven months of this year, a 19.6% increase compared to the same period last year.

Accordingly, the U.S. market accounted for 26.8% of Vietnam’s coconut export value in the first seven months of 2025, a significant rise from 18.1% in the same period last year.
In contrast, China’s market share stood at 21.8%, a 3.7 percentage point decrease compared to the same period last year.
Statistical data also shows that among the top 16 key markets for Vietnamese coconut exports, only Thailand and South Korea recorded declines, while the rest experienced robust growth. Some markets even saw triple-digit growth, such as the UAE (172%), Puerto Rico (726%), Spain (116.1%), and Russia (138.6%).
Remarkably, Cambodia witnessed an extraordinary growth rate. In the first seven months of this year, the neighboring country spent 682 times more (equivalent to a 68,134% increase) compared to the same period last year on importing coconuts from Vietnam.
According to the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, the demand for coconuts in the U.S., China, and the Middle East has risen rapidly amid limited global supply, making Vietnamese coconuts more competitive in terms of pricing.
Furthermore, since 2023, when the U.S. officially opened its market to fresh Vietnamese coconuts, businesses have swiftly capitalized on the opportunity by investing in packaging, quality, and expanding distribution channels.
Similarly, in August 2024, the protocol on official exports of fresh coconuts to China was signed, significantly boosting exports of this refreshing fruit to the populous market. The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment considers China a crucial and potential market, as the country consumes 4 billion coconuts annually, including approximately 2.6 billion fresh coconuts.
Vietnam currently ranks fourth in Asia and fifth globally in coconut exports. The target by 2030 is to expand the coconut cultivation area to 210,000 hectares, with the Mekong Delta region accounting for approximately 170,000-175,000 hectares.
