Post-2030: Transitioning All International Flights to Long Thanh Airport

The Vietnam Aviation Authority has submitted a proposal to the Ministry of Construction outlining a plan to distribute operations between Tan Son Nhat and Long Thanh airports. Post-2030, all international flights will be exclusively handled at Long Thanh International Airport.

According to the Vietnam Aviation Authority, if all air traffic is centralized at Long Thanh Airport from the outset, most passengers (primarily originating from Ho Chi Minh City center) would face a 40km commute, incurring additional costs and time. In contrast, Tan Son Nhat Airport is only 6-7km from the city center.

Based on this, the Aviation Authority proposes a two-phase plan to distribute flights between Long Thanh and Tan Son Nhat. This phased approach ensures Long Thanh’s role as an international gateway while maintaining parallel operations to meet passenger demand. The details are as follows:

Phase 1 (2025-2030): Both airports will handle international flights, with Long Thanh gradually taking the lead.

The Aviation Authority will direct new international routes, increased frequency flights to Ho Chi Minh City, and new airlines to operate exclusively from Long Thanh, rather than Tan Son Nhat.

The transition will begin in the summer of 2026, encouraging airlines to shift European, American, and Oceanic routes to Long Thanh. Subsequently, routes to the Middle East, Northeast Asia, and Southeast Asia will follow suit.

From 2028 to 2030 (end of Phase 1), most international flights will operate from Long Thanh, except for short-haul routes (under 1,000km) by Vietnamese airlines, which will remain at Tan Son Nhat.

For domestic passengers, Tan Son Nhat will continue as the primary hub, while Long Thanh will handle a portion based on demand.

Phase 2 (Post-2030): Once regional transportation infrastructure (road and rail) is complete, the Vietnam Aviation Authority recommends that all regular international flights operate from Long Thanh International Airport, establishing it as a “regional air transport hub for international transit in the Ho Chi Minh City area.”

Tan Son Nhat International Airport will then handle domestic flights, non-regular international flights, and chartered flights for organizations and individuals.
