On September 29, the People’s Committee of Gia Lai Province issued an official document to the Department of Agriculture and Environment, the Management Board of Bac Bien Ho Protective Forest, and the People’s Committee of Bien Ho Commune. The directive mandates an investigation and appropriate action regarding the unauthorized land clearing and road construction on Chu Nam Mountain.

Additionally, the document emphasizes the need to clarify responsibilities and impose strict penalties on involved individuals and organizations in accordance with the law.

Illegal land clearing on Chu Nam Mountain, including 1,195 m² managed by the Bac Bien Ho Protective Forest Management Board

According to the People’s Committee of Bien Ho Commune, a total area of 4,250 m² on Chu Nam Mountain has been illegally cleared. This includes 1,195 m² in compartment 5, sub-compartment 249, under the jurisdiction of the Bac Bien Ho Protective Forest Management Board; 470 m² with unclear ownership; and the remainder classified as agricultural land.

The cleared areas have a surface width of 4 meters and heights ranging from 0.5 to 1.5 meters above the original ground level, with some sections reaching up to 3 meters.

The People’s Committee of Bien Ho Commune identified Mr. C.H.T.A (born in 1983, Pleiku Ward, Gia Lai) and Mr. Le Van Qui (born in 1974, Dien Hong Ward, Gia Lai) as the individuals who hired machinery for excavation, land clearing, and road construction. The stated purpose was to create pathways for agricultural vehicles to transport seedlings and fertilizers, ostensibly to support farming activities (?).

Local authorities confirmed that 4,250 m² of land on Chu Nam Mountain was illegally cleared

The People’s Committee of Bien Ho Commune stated that these actions have altered the terrain, changed the slope of agricultural land, and pose a risk of landslides. This could negatively impact the farming activities of households located below the cleared area.

Chu Nam Mountain, known as the “Roof of the West” in Gia Lai Province, is a captivating destination for nature enthusiasts. Located approximately 30 km from the former center of Pleiku City, the mountain offers breathtaking views.

From its summit, visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of Pleiku City, T’Nung Lake, Tan Son Dam, and the legendary Chu Dang Ya Volcano. Early mornings are particularly special, as a sea of clouds often blankets the valleys, creating a truly spectacular sight.
