When it comes to exploring the mountainous regions of Northern Vietnam, many travelers immediately think of iconic destinations like the terraced rice fields of Hoang Su Phi, the Dong Van Karst Plateau, or Ba Be Lake. However, few places leave as lasting an impression as Ban Gioc Waterfall in Cao Bang – a majestic cascade straddling the Vietnam-China border.

Not only is Ban Gioc one of Vietnam’s most breathtaking waterfalls, but its unique geographical location sets it apart. The higher waterfall is entirely within Vietnamese territory, while the main cascade flows through both Vietnam and China, making it one of the world’s rare cross-border waterfalls.

Recently, Cao Bang Province and Sun Group signed a memorandum of understanding to develop the Ban Gioc Waterfall Tourism Area, spanning approximately 1,000 hectares. The project aims to transform this site into a world-class tourism complex featuring luxury resorts, entertainment facilities, and community-based tourism, while preserving the natural landscape and the cultural heritage of the Tay and Nung ethnic groups.

A major highlight is the cross-border tourism experience between Vietnam and China, requiring no visa, allowing visitors to explore both sides of the waterfall in a single journey.

The tourism area will feature modern infrastructure, including high-end resorts, entertainment services, and cultural experiences. Visitors can admire the cascading waters, take boat trips, visit border markets, and savor the unique cuisines of both nations within the area.

With Sun Group’s involvement – known for its successful projects in Sapa, Phu Quoc, and Da Nang – Ban Gioc is poised for a transformative upgrade, blending modernity with natural and cultural preservation. The government has also allocated funds for infrastructure development, paving the way for sustainable growth in one of the world’s most stunning waterfalls.

In the near future, Ban Gioc Waterfall will evolve from a popular domestic check-in spot into a global gateway, offering international visitors a unique blend of Vietnamese and Chinese cultures. With this ambitious project, Cao Bang is set to become a new highlight on the global tourism map.

Cao Bang Offers More Than Just Waterfalls

Beyond Ban Gioc, Cao Bang boasts a wealth of natural and cultural treasures that captivate every visitor. Just a few kilometers away lies Ngườm Ngao Cave, a must-see destination.

This limestone cave stretches nearly 3km, featuring stunning stalactites and stalagmites that resemble an underground palace. The shimmering stone formations create an ethereal atmosphere, likened to a forest of rocks and golden waterfalls.

Nearby, Thang Hen Lake is a serene gem nestled in the Trùng Khánh mountains. Located nearly 1,000 meters above sea level, its crystal-clear waters wind through limestone peaks. The lake is steeped in the legend of Nàng Thang and Nàng Hen, adding a poetic and mysterious allure.

Cao Bang is also a living museum of history, home to iconic revolutionary sites. The Pác Bó Historical Site is where President Ho Chi Minh lived and led the revolutionary movement after returning to Vietnam in 1941. Sitting by the Lenin Stream and Marx Mountain, visitors can immerse themselves in the heroic spirit of Vietnam’s struggle for independence.

Local cuisine is another highlight. Cao Bang’s egg rolls, served with clear broth, and the Tay ethnic group’s famous seven-spice roasted duck are must-tries. Dishes like sour pho and smoked lap xuong also delight food enthusiasts. Visiting during the rice harvest or buckwheat flower season offers vibrant landscapes and traditional ethnic festivals.
