Previously, the Hanoi People’s Committee approved the list of construction works and investment projects expected to commence on the occasion of the 71st anniversary of the Capital Liberation Day (October 10, 1954 – October 10, 2025). Among the 8 projects to be launched, the Thuong Cat Bridge and its approach roads construction project stands out.

The Thuong Cat Bridge and its approach roads have a total investment of nearly VND 8.3 trillion (funded by the city’s budget). The project was approved by the Hanoi People’s Council in March 2023. The project investor is the Hanoi Transportation Infrastructure Investment Project Management Board.

Thuong Cat Bridge is a special-class structure, and its approach roads are urban main roads. The project has a total length of approximately 5.2 km, starting at the intersection with Ky Vu Road in Thuong Cat Ward (former Bac Tu Liem District) and ending at the intersection with Road 23B in Dai Mach Commune (former Dong Anh District).

The typical cross-section of Thuong Cat Bridge ranges from 31 to 53 meters wide, including 6 motor vehicle lanes and 2 non-motorized lanes. The southern approach road is 60 meters wide, featuring a 6-lane bridge approach, 2 mixed lanes, along with median strips, safety zones, and sidewalks. The northern approach road is 50 meters wide, comprising 4 motor vehicle lanes and 2 mixed lanes.

On January 25, 2024, the Hanoi People’s Committee held the announcement and award ceremony for the architectural design competition of Thuong Cat Bridge. The jury awarded the first prize to design TC-03 by the consortium of Transport Engineering Design Corporation – JSC and Lap Phuong Architecture Joint Stock Company.

The winning design, “Peaceful Wings,” features a main bridge with 4 cable-stayed spans and piers gently curved outward, resembling the wings of a soaring bird.

The bridge’s design draws inspiration from the proverb “Land of plenty attracts birds,” seamlessly blending into the rich ecosystem of the Red River while symbolizing global connectivity.

Hanoi strives to become a friendly, hospitable, and peaceful city. Thus, the image of peaceful wings guiding vehicles across the bridge represents Hanoi’s long-term development vision.

The construction of Thuong Cat Bridge will ensure the synchronization and continuity of Ring Road 3.5 investments. It will also alleviate traffic congestion on Road 70 and Ring Road 3, while establishing crucial infrastructure frameworks in the capital.
