According to Vietnam Electricity (EVN), at 23:12 on September 30th, the Electricity Project Management Unit 1, alongside relevant units, successfully energized the 500 kV Lao Cai – Vinh Yen transmission line project, completing it 8 months ahead of the schedule approved by the Prime Minister’s investment decision.

The 500 kV Lao Cai – Vinh Yen transmission line, a national key project, commenced on March 16th, spanning Lao Cai and Phu Tho provinces. It originates at the 500 kV Lao Cai substation and terminates at the 500 kV Vinh Yen substation.

With a total investment of over VND 7,410 billion, the project is financed through an 80% loan from the Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Foreign Trade of Vietnam (Vietcombank) and a 20% counterpart fund from EVN. The project includes a double-circuit 500 kV transmission line spanning over 229 km, with a total of 468 tower foundation positions.

Simultaneously, the Phase 2 of the 500 kV Lao Cai Substation project, with a total investment of over VND 1,564 billion, has also been completed. This includes the construction and energization of the 500 kV distribution yard and the 500 kV transformer, ensuring synchronization with the 500 kV Lao Cai – Vinh Yen transmission line project.

EVN stated that upon operation, the 500 kV Lao Cai – Vinh Yen transmission line can transmit approximately 3,000 MW from hydropower plants in the Northwest region and neighboring provinces to the national grid, enhancing electricity import capacity.

Additionally, the line strengthens the connection between regions within the power system, enhances the safe and stable operation of the national power system, reduces energy losses in the transmission grid, and improves EVN’s power production and business efficiency.

Following the successful energization of the 500 kV Lao Cai – Vinh Yen transmission line and other projects, Vietnam Electricity, the Electricity Project Management Unit 1, and relevant units will continue to complete the construction and related administrative procedures.

Vietnam Electricity aims to operate the project in early October, celebrating the 71st anniversary of the Capital Liberation Day (October 10, 1954 – October 10, 2025) and welcoming the 1st National Congress of the Government Party Committee for the 2025-2030 term and the 14th National Congress of the Party.
