The Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee has recently approved the regulations and design requirements for a competition to select the architectural design of an overpass as part of Component 2 of the North-South Axis Road Upgrade Project (from Nguyen Van Linh to the Ben Luc – Long Thanh Expressway). Implemented through a public-private partnership (BOT), the project aims to modernize the southern area’s transportation infrastructure.

Exclusive Access for Four-Wheeled Vehicles and Above

The competition focuses on the main overpass, spanning 6.62 km, designed to run along the North-South Axis, completely separated from the parallel local roads below. The overpass will feature a cross-section of 18.5 meters, accommodating four lanes for cars (two in each direction), with a design speed of 80 km/h. It will exclusively serve four-wheeled vehicles and above, with no provisions for motorcycles or non-motorized vehicles.

Access points are strategically located at three key positions: near Rach Dia Bridge, the elevated section close to Nguyen Van Tao Intersection, and the midpoint of the route (near Warehouse B Junction). All entry and exit ramps will directly connect to the parallel roads, facilitating local traffic, residential needs, and access to industrial zones. This design ensures smooth traffic flow on the overpass while minimizing interference from mixed traffic below.

The overpass is designed for high-speed, uninterrupted travel, free from cross-traffic or parking disruptions. Access points are kept to a minimum, appearing only at major intersections or strategic locations, to maintain its function as a fast, sustainable, and long-term urban transport axis.

Total Prize Value of 300 Million VND

The architectural competition offers a total prize pool of 300 million VND, including 150 million VND for first place, 100 million VND for second place, and 50 million VND for third place. The competition is expected to last approximately 65 days from the approval date, attracting participants from design and consulting firms both domestically and internationally.

The entire North-South Axis Road Upgrade Project has a total investment of nearly 9.894 trillion VND. Ho Chi Minh City plans to select investors and sign contracts in Q4-2025, commence land clearance from late 2025 to Q3-2026, and aim for completion by 2028.

Once operational, the project will establish a seamless, high-speed transport corridor connecting the existing city center with the Southern Saigon Urban Area and the Hiep Phuoc Port Urban Area. It will also serve as a strategic radial route, directly linking to Ring Road 2, the Ben Luc – Long Thanh Expressway (Ring Road 3), and future Ring Road 4. This will enhance Ho Chi Minh City’s transportation network, catering to both intra-city travel and inter-regional connectivity with the Eastern and Southwestern regions, seaports, and the Long Thanh International Airport.
