According to the Thu Duc City People’s Committee, there are currently 24 flood-prone areas and 13 monitored flooding points. Notably, the Thu Duc Market area has experienced severe flooding during recent early-season rains, with water levels rising over half a meter in some locations.

Recent early-season rains have caused severe flooding in the Thu Duc Market area. The total rainfall catchment area draining into the market covers approximately 430 hectares.

The new construction project for the Rach Cau Ngang canal in Thu Duc District, Ho Chi Minh City, is accelerating its progress. This initiative promises to end the persistent flooding issues in the Thu Duc Market area.

This project is a key component of the former Thu Duc City’s flood control infrastructure series, aimed at enhancing urban infrastructure and improving residents’ quality of life.

Commencing in April 2025, the Rach Cau Ngang canal project is expected to be completed within 300 days (10 months). On-site observations reveal approximately 10 workers actively engaged, demonstrating the project’s urgent implementation.

Cau Ngang has long been considered a bottleneck in the water flow, causing severe congestion and localized flooding in the streets surrounding Thu Duc Market during heavy rains.

Most roads around Thu Duc Market, such as Vo Van Ngan, Kha Van Can, Duong Van Cam, and Dang Thi Ranh, feature reinforced concrete circular drains with diameters under 100cm. Built years ago, these drains only serve individual roads and fail to meet regional or catchment area drainage needs.

With a total investment of 13.2 billion VND, the new construction of the Rach Cau Ngang canal is seen as a critical solution to improve water flow and reduce flooding in the Thu Duc Market area.

Alongside the Rach Cau Ngang canal project, the Thu Duc Canal renovation project is underway. This includes embankment construction, canal dredging, and pumping station installation, with a total estimated cost exceeding 4,000 billion VND.

These projects, combined with the drainage system upgrades in the Thu Duc Market area (along Duong Van Cam, Dang Thi Ranh, Kha Van Can, and Ho Van Tu streets), are scheduled for construction in Q4/2025. Together, they will form an integrated system to comprehensively address flooding issues.

These flood control initiatives are expected to not only permanently resolve flooding in Thu Duc Ward but also enhance technical infrastructure, improve intra-regional connectivity, and promote sustainable urban development.
