On October 6th, the Editorial Board of the Socio-Economic Subcommittee for the 14th National Party Congress held a working session with the People’s Committee of Can Tho City.

Can Tho Airport currently operates only a few flights daily.

Mr. Tran Hong Quang, Deputy Director of the Institute of Strategy and Policy on Finance (Ministry of Finance), stated that the program aimed to understand Can Tho City’s development directions. This information will support the drafting of documents for the 14th National Party Congress. Key focuses include a growth target exceeding 10%, progress in addressing challenges, the potential contributions of major energy projects, post-merger industrial development, the deep-sea port at Tran De, and the establishment of a science and technology hub, tourism, and more.

According to the People’s Committee of Can Tho City, over the past five years, the city’s economic growth averaged 7.4% annually, with per capita GRDP reaching over 100 million VND by 2025. However, the city faces significant challenges, such as an unclear regional core role, underutilized transportation infrastructure, and major projects like the airport and seaport not operating at full capacity.

In response, Can Tho aims to position itself as the region’s hub for trade, tourism, logistics, processing industries, education, specialized healthcare, and science and technology. This includes upgrading Can Tho Airport and developing the Tran De seaport to serve as key transportation nodes and international trade gateways.

The leadership of the Can Tho People’s Committee proposed that the working group consider adding key tasks and projects to the Central Action Program. These include the Tran De seaport project, aimed at transforming it into an international transshipment hub, and investing in the upgrade of Can Tho International Airport to enhance its role as a regional aviation center and trade gateway, thereby boosting tourism.

The working group acknowledged Can Tho’s proposals and will compile a report for the Socio-Economic Subcommittee to support the development of documents for the 14th National Party Congress.
