According to the decision, the planning will cover the period from 2021 to 2030, with a vision to 2050. The study area spans approximately 1,960 hectares and its surroundings. Gia Binh International Airport is envisioned to achieve the 4F airport level as per the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards. It will feature modern infrastructure, top-tier service quality, and ensure competitiveness, operational safety, and national defense security.
Key tasks in the planning adjustment include: conducting surveys and collecting necessary data; updating relevant local plans; studying adjustments to the airport’s scale, level, airfield configuration, and civil aviation area to optimize space and meet long-term development needs. Additionally, the planning authority will explore other adjustments (if any), estimate total investment, and propose phased investment plans aligned with actual requirements.
The planning adjustment must be completed within 30 days, excluding time for appraisal and approval as per regulations. The Ministry of Construction has tasked the Vietnam Aviation Administration with incorporating appraisal results to finalize the planning adjustment task. The Administration is also responsible for implementation, coordination with relevant agencies, units, and sponsors during the planning, supervision, and finalization process.
During surveys and planning adjustments, the Vietnam Aviation Administration must closely coordinate with the Ministry of Public Security, the People’s Committee of Bac Ninh Province, and related units to ensure compliance with security and safety regulations. They will also collaborate on demarcating planning boundaries.
The planning sponsor, the Single-Member LLC for Aviation Construction Design and Consulting, is required to adhere to government principles and regulations throughout the implementation process.
Gia Binh International Airport is designated as a dual-use airport for both civil and defense purposes. The 2021-2030 planning goal is to achieve the 4E airport level as per ICAO standards, with a capacity of 30 million passengers and 1.6 million tons of cargo annually. It will accommodate large aircraft such as B777, B787, A350, A321, and specialized aircraft.
The airport’s approach and landing systems are designed to meet CAT III standards for runway 07L/25R and CAT II for runway 07R/25L.
By 2050, Gia Binh International Airport is projected to handle 50 million passengers and 2.5 million tons of cargo annually, maintaining the 4E airport level as per ICAO standards. The runway system will meet CAT III standards for runways 07L/25R, 07R/25L, and 06/24.
