What is a Loggia?

Loggias are commonly found in high-rise apartments, with a minimum height of 1.2 meters. There are two types: service loggias and leisure loggias. Service loggias are typically attached to kitchens or bathrooms, used for laundry and drying clothes. Leisure loggias, on the other hand, are often connected to living rooms or bedrooms, serving as relaxation spaces.

What is a Balcony?

A balcony is an outward-projecting area, typically with one side attached to the building’s wall and the other three sides open. Balconies feature railings for safety, creating a more open space compared to loggias.

Balconies are popular in townhouses, villas, and luxury apartments, adding architectural flair to the facade while providing expansive views. They are often utilized as relaxation areas.

Differences Between Loggia and Balcony

Both balconies and loggias contribute to a building’s facade, yet they differ in several ways.

In terms of position, loggias are recessed within the building’s floor plan, while balconies extend outward.

Regarding views, loggias have only one open side, with walls on either side, offering greater privacy and security. Balconies, however, provide views in multiple directions due to their open design.

Loggias always have overhead coverage, either from the roof or the floor above. Balconies may or may not have a roof, depending on the owner’s preference. Consequently, loggias are less affected by weather conditions like sun, rain, and wind, whereas balconies are more exposed.

Loggias are versatile, found in both low-rise and high-rise buildings. Balconies, however, are primarily used in low-rise structures, most commonly in townhouses and villas.
