PetroVietnam Chairman Le Manh Hung inspects the construction progress at the Long Phu 1 project site.
During a working session on October 2 with the Long Phu 1 Project Management Board (PMB), PetroVietnam Chairman Le Manh Hung emphasized the requirement to commission the plant by 2027.
The Groupâs leadership also directed the PMB and member units such as PTSC and PETROCONs to closely coordinate and innovate management approaches. The target is to operate Unit 1 by Q2/2027 and Unit 2 by Q3 of the same year.

Construction activities at the Soc Trang site are being accelerated. According to the PMB, the tendering process has progressed, with 27 out of 36 packages having completed the issuance of bidding documents and negotiations.
Approximately 500 workers are currently on-site across seven signed packages. The boiler installation segment has reached 20.7% completion, surpassing the plan by 3.41%. Additionally, the procurement package for the turbine-generator set (STG) with General Electric (GE) is being prioritized.

The Long Phu 1 PMB stated that, barring significant fluctuations in the value of remaining packages, the project is on track to meet the adjusted timeline. Commissioning the Long Phu 1 plant will hold significant economic importance, expected to supply approximately 7.8 billion kWh annually, while showcasing domestic enterprisesâ capabilities in managing complex projects.
The project commenced in 2015 but was halted at nearly 80% completion due to sanctions against the main contractor, Power Machines (Russia), leading to contract termination.
Based on Resolution 952 issued in early 2025, PetroVietnam has restarted the project, focusing on domestic engineersâ technical autonomy and negotiations with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). Despite legal challenges with the former main contractor, continuing the project is seen as essential to preserving the value of the invested assets, worth trillions of Vietnamese dong.
