Is Vietnamese Robusta Losing Its Crown?

As the world’s leading producer and exporter of Robusta coffee, Vietnam’s harvest season beginning in October has prompted international organizations to release related studies.

According to Rabobank (Netherlands), Brazil is poised to overtake Vietnam as the largest Robusta producer globally, with an estimated output of 24.7 million 60-kg bags this year, up from 19 million bags in 2020.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) forecasts Vietnam’s Robusta production this crop year to reach approximately 30 million bags.

Compared to Arabica, Robusta boasts higher biological resilience, enabling better tolerance to drought, heat, pests, and diseases, while also delivering higher yields.

In Indonesia, this harvest season is expected to yield around 12 million bags of coffee, with Robusta accounting for approximately 10.2 million bags.

In the first five months of the crop year, Indonesia exported over 2.8 million bags of Robusta, a 163% increase compared to the same period last year.
