Up-Close Look at the Nearly 3km Stretch of Ho Chi Minh City’s Ring Road 2 Ahead of Its Resumption

After a five-year hiatus, the construction site of the Ring Road 2 project in Ho Chi Minh City lies in disarray, cluttered with debris, overgrown with weeds, and marred by accumulated waste. The project is slated to resume construction by the end of October 2025.

The 2.75 km section of Ring Road 2 (Ward Tam Binh, Ho Chi Minh City), connecting from Go Dua Intersection to Pham Van Dong Street, is set to resume construction by the end of October. This BT-funded project, with a total investment of over 2.5 trillion VND, began in 2017 but halted in 2020 after completing approximately 44% of the work. Since 2019, most of the land along Tam Binh Street has been handed over, yet many sections remain unfinished, overgrown with weeds.

The area facing Pham Van Dong Street lies abandoned, with machinery removed and no personnel on-site. Weeds have overtaken the construction site, obscuring pathways and barriers.

Designed with a width of 67 meters, the first phase includes two parallel lanes, each 10.5 meters wide, accommodating six traffic lanes. The resumption of Section 3 is expected to complete Ring Road 2, establishing a seamless connection between eastern Ho Chi Minh City, the city center, and neighboring provinces.

On-site, two bridges over the canal remain the most visible remnants, unchanged since construction halted five years ago. Most machinery has been removed, leaving the site inactive.

On the bridge, construction materials lie scattered, with stagnant rainwater and overgrown weeds. Many metal components have rusted due to prolonged abandonment.

Bridge pillars show discolored, stained concrete, covered in graffiti and moss, creating an unsightly appearance due to years of neglect.

Scattered construction materials amidst weeds and trash contribute to the site’s prolonged state of disrepair and abandonment.

In July 2019, two students tragically died from electrocution while playing here. The accident occurred because workers halted construction without disconnecting the power, leaving live wires exposed.

Before the resumption, Section 3 of Ring Road 2 still had several households yet to complete land handover, delaying project implementation.

Approximately 4 km away, residents near Binh Thai Intersection are handing over land for Section 2 of Ring Road 2. This 2.75 km segment, from Vo Nguyen Giap Street to Pham Van Dong Street, is scheduled to begin construction on October 30.

Ring Road 2, encircling Ho Chi Minh City, has approximately 14 km remaining to complete, divided into four projects totaling nearly 16 trillion VND. Section 1 (3.5 km from Phu Huu Bridge to Vo Nguyen Giap Street) is expected to start before November 15, while Section 4 (5.3 km from National Highway 1A to Nguyen Van Linh Street) is under public investment review.

Once completed, the 70 km route will serve as a strategic transportation axis, connecting eastern and western gateways, reducing central traffic congestion, and mitigating urban gridlock.
