According to the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (VAMA), hybrid vehicles continued their upward trend, maintaining strong sales in September. Specifically, VAMA members sold 1,371 hybrid vehicles, a slight 5% increase compared to August.

The top five best-selling hybrid models in September remained the Honda CR-V e:HEV RS, Toyota Corolla Cross HEV, Innova Cross HEV, Yaris Cross HEV, and Suzuki XL7 Hybrid. However, their rankings shifted during the month.

The Toyota Corolla Cross HEV took the lead with approximately 37% market share, selling 303 units in September. The Honda CR-V e:HEV RS, previously the top seller, secured the second spot with 273 units sold, a 2.2% increase from the previous month.

The Toyota Corolla Cross HEV was the best-selling hybrid in September.

The Toyota Innova Cross HEV and Suzuki XL7 Hybrid claimed the third and fourth positions, selling 259 and 249 units, respectively. These two models swapped places after a one-unit difference in sales last month. The Toyota Yaris Cross HEV maintained its fifth position despite a slight 9.6% sales decline.

In the year-to-date sales through September 2025, the Toyota Innova Cross HEV leads the hybrid market with 2,111 units sold. It is followed by the Toyota Corolla Cross HEV (1,953 units), Suzuki XL7 (1,845 units), and Honda CR-V e:HEV RS (1,558 units).

The presence of two seven-seater models, the Toyota Innova Cross HEV and Suzuki XL7, among the top sellers highlights the strong demand for family-oriented hybrid vehicles. Meanwhile, the Toyota Corolla Cross HEV and Honda CR-V e:HEV RS are also popular choices for young families, offering spacious interiors, comfort, and fuel-efficient hybrid engines.

Another hybrid model with impressive cumulative sales is the Toyota Camry HEV, which sold 970 units, ranking fifth in its segment. Notably, this model is one of the few in Vietnam with more hybrid variants than gasoline variants, with hybrid sales accounting for 60% of its total.

The Toyota Alphard HEV, with 101 units sold since the beginning of the year, also performed well, considering its high price tag of up to 4.615 billion VND.

According to VAMA, in the first three quarters of 2025, member companies sold a total of 9,785 hybrid vehicles, a 73% increase from the same period last year (5,652 units). This growth reflects the rising demand and acceptance of hybrid vehicles among Vietnamese consumers.

In reality, the hybrid vehicle market in Vietnam may be even larger than VAMA’s figures suggest, as brands like Jaecoo, Haval, BYD, and luxury brands such as Lexus, Volvo, Mercedes-Benz, and BMW do not disclose detailed hybrid sales data.

The expanding hybrid market has led to an increase in the number of hybrid models available. Since the beginning of the year, several new models have entered the market, including the Kia Carnival HEV, Honda HR-V e:HEV RS, Geely Monjaro, and several Chinese brands.

This trend is expected to continue through the end of the year. In October alone, the market will welcome new additions such as the Suzuki Fronx mild-hybrid, Volkswagen Golf eTSI, Mercedes-Benz E-Class 2025 with a 48V hybrid system, and BYD Seal 5 PHEV. These launches will further diversify the hybrid offerings across various segments and price points.

Plug-in hybrid vehicles are becoming increasingly popular in Vietnam.

The diversity in design, style, and technology—ranging from mild hybrids to plug-in hybrids—across various segments and price ranges has made hybrid vehicles more accessible to a broader audience.

Significantly, the revised Special Consumption Tax Law, effective from January 1, 2026, stipulates that gasoline-electric vehicles (with gasoline usage not exceeding 70%) will be taxed at 70% of the rate applied to conventional internal combustion engine vehicles. This regulation, once implemented, will enable price reductions for self-charging hybrid vehicles (HEVs), allowing consumers to save on ownership costs. This favorable condition is expected to significantly boost the growth of the hybrid vehicle segment in the coming years.
