The post about the “pinkening” iPhone gained significant attention online.
This transformation occurred only on the aluminum frame, while the Ceramic Shield glass retained its original orange hue. As a result, the device sported a unique two-tone appearance: predominantly pink with orange accents along the antenna bands and back edges. According to the original post on October 4 (now deleted), the phone initially showed a slight pink tint before deepening over time.
Theories Behind the Cause
The user has not yet contacted Apple Support or visited an Apple Store for inspection, leaving the exact cause undetermined. Reddit commenters proposed various theories, ranging from chemical reactions between aluminum and sweat, UV exposure, to more far-fetched ideas like radiation exposure.
Some speculated that the image was edited or that the poster tampered with the anodized layer for attention. The original poster denied this, stating, “I can’t imagine a sadder life than Photoshopping an iPhone for views.” Another case was shared by @TheGalox on X (Twitter), featuring a similar color shift on an iPhone 17 Pro Max.
Potential Link to New Anodizing Process
Experts suggest that the issue likely stems from flaws in the anodizing or dyeing process. However, if it were a dyeing defect, it should affect multiple units rather than isolated cases. The most plausible explanation is a combination of environmental factors like temperature and humidity, along with errors in Apple’s new anodizing process.
Anodized aluminum components typically withstand much higher temperatures than human skin can tolerate without discoloration, making heat an unlikely culprit.
Not the First Issue for iPhone 17
This isn’t the first issue reported with the iPhone 17 series. Previously, users complained about the aluminum back being prone to scratches, dubbed “Scratchgate” by the online community.
