Deputy Governor of the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV) Pham Thanh Ha speaks at the event

On the afternoon of October 15th, in Hanoi, the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV) in collaboration with SWIFT hosted a ceremony commemorating 30 years of SWIFT’s presence in Vietnam.

Deputy Governor Pham Thanh Ha emphasized that this milestone marks a significant journey of long-term collaboration between Vietnam’s banking community and the international financial system through the SWIFT network. It underscores Vietnam’s economy deepening integration into the global value chain.

The Deputy Governor noted that over the past 30 years, SWIFT has partnered with SBV and Vietnamese banks to connect them to a secure, reliable, and seamless international payment network. Notably, SWIFT recently facilitated the participation of a Vietnamese government delegation at Sibos 2025 in Frankfurt, Germany—the world’s largest annual financial event organized by SWIFT.

Over three decades, SWIFT has become a vital and trusted platform for international payment transactions in Vietnam. From the initial 8 member banks in 1995, the SWIFT network in Vietnam now boasts 86 members, including commercial banks, joint-venture banks, and foreign bank branches.

This has enabled Vietnamese banks to directly and securely connect with the global financial network, facilitating swift and efficient transactions. Vietnam’s SWIFT payment message volume has consistently grown at double-digit rates over the past decade, reaching 31 million in 2024. Vietnam currently ranks 14th in Asia and approximately 50th globally in SWIFT message volume.

Amid rapid global changes driven by emerging technologies like Cloud, AI, and Blockchain, the need for a fast, secure, innovative, and adaptive payment platform is increasingly critical.

Deputy Governor Pham Thanh Ha stated, “SBV expects SWIFT to continue innovating and deploying new technologies to develop a secure, modern, and adaptive payment platform that effectively serves SWIFT members in Vietnam. SBV is committed to working alongside the Vietnam SWIFT Committee (VietSWIFT) to enhance its role as a bridge to SWIFT regionally and globally.”

The Deputy Governor urged member banks to accelerate digital transformation, leverage SWIFT’s payment platform and innovative services, and enhance international integration efficiency and capabilities. Additionally, he called on SWIFT to strengthen its partnership with Vietnamese banks, enhancing connectivity and security in international financial transactions. This will contribute to building a modern, secure, and transparent payment network that better meets cross-border payment demands and supports Vietnamese businesses in deeper global value chain integration.
