On the morning of October 19, following a voter engagement session in Can Tho ahead of the National Assembly meeting, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh visited the Nam Long 2 social housing complex in the Nam Can Tho urban area (Cai Rang Ward). Accompanying him were leaders from various ministries, sectors, and local authorities.

The visit was part of an inspection to assess the progress of the initiative to construct at least 1 million social housing units for low-income individuals and industrial zone workers between 2021 and 2030. According to the targets set by the Prime Minister, the New Can Tho region (encompassing Can Tho, Soc Trang, and Hau Giang) is expected to complete 16,900 units.

As of October 15, Can Tho has initiated 10 projects, with 3 completed and 7 under construction. From 2021 to 2024, the locality has handed over 2,252 units. In 2025, an additional 1,073 out of 1,397 units are slated for completion, achieving 77% of the annual plan, with the remainder expected to be finalized by the second quarter of 2026. Over the five-year period, the city has completed 3,649 units, significantly addressing the growing housing demand of its residents.

To accelerate progress, the Can Tho People’s Committee prioritizes attracting investment in concentrated social housing developments and housing for the armed forces, integrated with healthcare, education, and transportation infrastructure. The city is also resolving legal hurdles for commercial projects and allocating 20% of land funds for social housing development as mandated. Authorities require the construction sector to conduct monthly inspections and collaborate with banks to facilitate access to preferential loans for homebuyers.

Among the standout projects, the Nam Long 2 apartment complex, developed by Nam Long Investment Corporation with a total investment of 1,253 billion VND, comprises 1,601 units designed to accommodate over 4,800 individuals. To date, 930 units have been handed over, while the remaining 671 are under construction and available for purchase at approximately 15.8 million VND per square meter.

During the visit, the Prime Minister acknowledged the efforts of the Can Tho government and investors, noting that the project has been highly successful in meeting market demand. He urged the developer to expedite construction timelines without compromising quality and to focus on developing integrated infrastructure, including schools, healthcare stations, and cultural-sports spaces, ensuring residents enjoy equitable living conditions comparable to those in commercial areas.

The Prime Minister also instructed Can Tho to continue reviewing land planning and propose tailored policies aligned with local realities. He encouraged creating an enabling environment for capable enterprises like Nam Long to undertake projects under the new mechanisms and policies of the National Assembly and the Government. According to the Prime Minister, social housing development is not only an economic imperative but also a social responsibility, helping workers, civil servants, and laborers stabilize their lives and remain committed to their workplaces long-term.
