Mitsubishi Xpander: A Top Contender in the Automotive Market

Since its launch in Vietnam around August 2018, the Mitsubishi Xpander has quickly become a standout phenomenon in the automotive industry. This compact Japanese MPV has even overshadowed the Toyota Innova, a vehicle once considered the go-to 7-seater for families nationwide.

The Mitsubishi Xpander is widely regarded as one of the most compelling purchases, thanks to its striking design, comfortable 7-seat configuration, robust engine capable of handling various driving conditions, and, most importantly, its competitive pricing.

In 2019, the Mitsubishi Xpander claimed the title of “sales champion” across the market, even surpassing the Toyota Vios in October of the same year, demonstrating its appeal beyond its segment.

The Mitsubishi Xpander shares similar dimensions with the Toyota Corolla Cross (a high-clearance B+ segment vehicle) but offers a 7-seat layout.

The Mitsubishi Xpander continued its dominance, peaking in 2023 when it officially became Vietnam’s best-selling vehicle with 19,740 units sold.

Its appeal persisted into 2024 and beyond; in March 2025 alone, 2,530 Xpanders were delivered to customers, leading the MPV segment and ranking among the top-selling gasoline/diesel vehicles.

The squared-off rear design maximizes interior space.

However, mid-year sales figures indicate a less optimistic trend for the Xpander. While it led the MPV segment in July 2025 with 1,553 units sold, sales plummeted to 906 units in August, before rebounding to 1,792 units in September, placing it 7th among the market’s top-selling vehicles.

Meanwhile, a new MPV entrant has swiftly entered the top 5, with over 2,000 units delivered.

Is the Mitsubishi Xpander Facing a New Threat?

This emerging competitor is the VinFast Limo Green.

In its first month of delivery, VinFast reported 2,120 Limo Green units handed over to customers nationwide. This immediately placed it 4th in sales, behind other VinFast models like the VF 5, VF 3, and Hero Green.

The VinFast Limo Green began official deliveries in September.

Like the Mitsubishi Xpander, the VinFast Limo Green offers 7 seats but boasts a larger size, positioning it in the mid-size MPV segment, while the Xpander remains a compact MPV.

Another significant advantage of the VinFast Limo Green is its supporting charging network, coupled with a free charging policy.

This is a major benefit for service-oriented buyers. The free charging and minimal maintenance requirements significantly reduce operational costs compared to fossil fuel vehicles, as drivers often say, “Whatever you earn, you keep.”

Free charging is a significant advantage for VinFast electric vehicles, including the Limo Green.

If the charging network can adequately support high-usage service vehicles, it will undoubtedly reassure family and individual users about electric vehicle adoption.

While VinFast has not made an official announcement, rumors suggest the company will soon launch a family-oriented version of the Limo Green with enhanced features and equipment. This could introduce another compelling MPV option to the market, potentially challenging the Mitsubishi Xpander’s dominance.

The VinFast Limo Green matches the dimensions of mid-size MPVs like the Toyota Innova Cross and is 200 mm longer than the Xpander.

However, there is currently no research or data indicating that potential Xpander buyers are opting for the Limo Green instead.

Interestingly, when VinFast opened pre-orders for its Green line, including the Limo Green, in mid-March 2025, Mitsubishi Xpander sales in April dropped to 972 units, down from 2,530 in March.

The latest version of the Mitsubishi Xpander has just been launched.

With over 45,000 pre-orders (for the entire Green line) within 72 hours of opening, VinFast Limo Green deliveries are expected to increase and remain stable, posing a direct threat to the Xpander’s position.

Mitsubishi swiftly responded by introducing an upgraded Xpander version in late September, featuring enhancements to elevate the driving experience, while maintaining a similar price point.
