UAE’s G42 Group Plans $2 Billion AI Super Data Center in Ho Chi Minh City
The UAE-based G42 Group is set to invest $2 billion in constructing an AI super data center in Ho Chi Minh City. This announcement was made by Lam Dinh Thang, Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Science and Technology, during a presentation at the City Party Congress on October 15.
Established in 2018 and headquartered in Abu Dhabi, G42 is a leading player in artificial intelligence, cloud computing, supercomputing, data technology, and applications across healthcare, finance, energy, and space sectors.
Regarding G42’s project, the city has reported to the central government and established a working group to collaborate with the investor. According to Mr. Thang, Ho Chi Minh City is also attracting several large and super-large data centers, positioning itself as a strategic hub for science and technology with innovative policies and mechanisms.
Over the next five years, the city aims to achieve significant milestones: Total Factor Productivity (TFP) contributing at least 60% to economic growth, the digital economy accounting for 30-40% of GRDP, becoming an international innovation hub by 2030, and ranking among the top 100 most dynamic startup ecosystems globally. Additionally, the city plans to establish at least five internationally accredited research centers in strategic technology fields.
An AI super data center is a powerhouse infrastructure optimized for AI workloads, distinct from conventional data centers with less demanding CPU and storage configurations.
IBM defines an AI data center as a facility designed to “train, deploy, and deliver AI services” with hardware, networking, and storage optimized for AI tasks.
Cisco emphasizes that AI data centers require superior GPUs, network design, and cooling systems compared to traditional data centers to handle massive data volumes and computational demands.
McKinsey estimates that by 2030, meeting AI demands will require $5.2 trillion in investments across the compute and data center infrastructure value chain. Major players like Amazon ($100 billion), Google ($75 billion), Meta ($65 billion), and Microsoft ($80 billion by 2025) have already pledged substantial investments.
