The Jetour Zongheng G700, a Chery SUV, has made history as the first SUV to successfully cross the Yangtze River. The crossing took place on October 16th, departing from Heisha Zhou Ferry Terminal in Wuhu, Anhui Province, the city where Chery is headquartered.
The journey across China’s mightiest river was completed in 22 minutes. The SUV navigated approximately 1.2 km of water, battling currents ranging from 5 to 10 km/h. The vehicle maintained stable buoyancy throughout, traveling at a steady 7 km/h before reaching the Nanlong Ferry Terminal.
The Zongheng G700’s successful crossing is attributed to its unique features, including a seamless body, non-porous paint, an active air circulation system, and a high-speed silicon carbide 800V high-voltage propulsion system. The vehicle’s 6-axis gyroscope continuously adjusted the body’s balance, ensuring precise control during the Yangtze River crossing.
Scheduled for launch on October 19th, the Zongheng G700 is positioned as a premium large hybrid SUV. It will be available in four configurations, with pre-sale prices ranging from 349,900 to 429,900 Chinese yuan (approximately $49,000 to $60,200 USD).
The SUV is powered by a dedicated 2.0TD hybrid engine, delivering 155 kW of power and 340N·m of torque, with a thermal efficiency of 45.5%. Built on an 800V architecture, it features a 2-speed hybrid DHT gearbox, a dual-layer 4C battery system, and a 2-speed P4 electric motor. The vehicle achieves a combined output of 560 kW (751 horsepower) and 795N·m of torque, with a range of 1,400 km on a full tank.
The Yangtze River (Chinese: Chang Jiang) is the longest river in both China and Asia, and the third-longest in the world, stretching 6,300 km (3,915 miles). It originates from the Tanggula Mountains on the Tibetan Plateau and flows eastward through central-southern and eastern China.
