According to the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (VAMA), domestic car sales rebounded in September after two consecutive months of decline.

This recovery was largely driven by promotional discounts from manufacturers and dealerships. Additionally, delayed deliveries coinciding with the Lunar July (late August) were fulfilled in the latter half of September, significantly contributing to the overall sales increase.

Amidst this market upturn, most top-selling models achieved impressive growth, with average sales exceeding 1,300 units. Several models capitalized on this momentum to surge ahead, claiming leadership in their respective segments during September.

Notably, the Toyota Yaris Cross stood out with 1,964 units delivered, nearly doubling its August sales. This remarkable growth propelled the Japanese model past the VinFast VF 6 (1,933 units), reclaiming the top spot in the B-segment SUV category after two months of trailing the electric vehicle.

When considering only internal combustion engine vehicles, the Toyota Yaris Cross emerged as the best-selling model in September, outperforming major competitors like the Mazda CX-5, Mitsubishi Xpander, and Ford Ranger. It has been a cornerstone of Toyota Vietnam’s success since the beginning of the year, with cumulative sales reaching 9,655 units, accounting for 20% of the company’s total sales.

Another Toyota model, the Vios, also enjoyed a strong month with 1,292 units sold, a 78% increase. Although it didn’t make the top 10 best-selling cars of the month, this performance helped the Vios reclaim the top position in the B-segment sedan category after being overtaken by the Honda City the previous month.

The strong September sales boosted the Vios’s year-to-date total to 8,496 units, creating a 2,000-3,000 unit gap over its main rivals, the Honda City and Hyundai Accent. Not only does the Toyota Vios lead the B-segment sedan category, but it is also the only sedan featured in the list of Vietnam’s top 10 best-selling cars for the first three quarters of the year.

Lastly, the most impressive shift in September occurred in the MPV segment with the VinFast Limo Green. In its first month of reported sales, the 7-seater model achieved 2,120 units, dominating the mid-size MPV category and outperforming the Toyota Innova Cross (671 units) and Hyundai Custin (106 units).

Even within the broader MPV segment, the VinFast Limo Green’s September sales surpassed the segment leader, the Mitsubishi Xpander (1,792 units).

VinFast Limo Green claims the top spot in the MPV segment in its first month of sales reporting.

This marks the first change in the MPV segment’s sales leadership in nearly three years. The last time the Xpander was overtaken was in September 2022, when the Toyota Veloz Cross sold 2,572 units compared to the Xpander’s 2,416 units.

However, the 2,120 unit sales figure was largely driven by pre-orders and concentrated deliveries, as the MPV began deliveries in early August and reported sales starting in September. Therefore, the ability of the Limo Green to sustain high sales in the long term remains to be seen.

Beyond the three models highlighted above, the leading models in other segments remained largely unchanged, including the VinFast VF 5 (A-segment SUV), Mazda CX-5 (C-segment SUV), Ford Everest (D-segment SUV), Ford Ranger (pickup truck), Mazda3 (C-segment sedan), and Toyota Camry (D-segment sedan).
