The Grand Overview of Northern Vietnam’s Largest Airport Construction Site

Nestled in Gia Bình, Bắc Ninh, the nearly 2,000-hectare airport is poised to become a cutting-edge aviation and logistics hub for the capital region. Designed to alleviate pressure on Nội Bài Airport, this transformative project promises to catalyze local economic growth. Currently, the site is undergoing initial land preparation and technical infrastructure development.

Gia Bình Airport, with a phase one investment of nearly VND 162 trillion, spans approximately 1,960 hectares, surpassing the size of Noi Bai and Tan Son Nhat international airports (both around 1,500 hectares). It ranks second only to Long Thanh Airport, which covers about 5,000 hectares.

This scale positions Gia Bình as the largest aviation project in the Northern region, poised to become the new aviation and logistics hub for the capital region. Initial operations are expected to commence by late 2026.

Strategically located, Gia Bình Airport is less than 40 km from four provincial cities, enabling travelers to reach nearby destinations within an hour.

The project is divided into two phases: by 2030, it aims to serve approximately 30 million passengers annually and handle 1.6 million tons of cargo. By 2050, an additional VND 53 trillion will be invested to increase capacity to 50 million passengers and 2.5 million tons of cargo per year.

During the 2021–2030 period, Gia Bình Airport will feature two 3,500-meter-long runways, each 45 meters wide and spaced 1,800 meters apart. By 2050, two additional runways will be added in the southern area, adhering to international aviation standards.

Gia Bình International Airport is designed to connect with a highway from Hanoi to the airport and Hai Phong City. Additionally, an urban railway line will link the airport to the capital and the national railway network.

The 35-km highway from Hanoi to the airport, with a 120-meter cross-section, requires an investment of over VND 71 trillion. Some sections will be newly constructed, while others will overlap with the Hanoi–Thai Nguyen Expressway and Ring Road 3 to utilize existing infrastructure.

Currently, contractors are maximizing manpower and equipment to expedite construction. Site preparation and the construction of several components have already begun.

The surrounding area is primarily agricultural land, with many rice fields nearing harvest. Local residents report that after the harvest, the investor will proceed with land clearance and subsequent construction phases.

Approximately 2,060 households, occupying over 67 hectares of residential land, will be relocated for phase two of the Gia Bình Airport project. Bac Ninh Province is accelerating land clearance efforts to provide a clean land fund to the investor.

In addition to residential land, the project will reclaim nearly 526 hectares of agricultural and commercial land, along with land allocated for administrative, healthcare, cultural, and educational facilities.

Upon completion, Gia Bình Airport will significantly reduce the burden on Noi Bai Airport, enhance air transport capacity in the Northern region, and meet the growing demand for travel and logistics in the area.

Designed as a 4E-class international airport, Gia Bình will serve both civilian and defense purposes. Notably, it is projected to achieve a 4-star rating from Skytrax by 2029, rising to 5 stars by 2032, and ranking among the world’s top 10 most modern and passenger-friendly airports by 2037.
