Thanks to the recent surge in HDB and VJC stocks, Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao’s net worth has seen a significant boost. She holds prominent positions as Chairwoman of Vietjet, Vice Chairwoman of HDBank, and Chairwoman of Sovico Group.
According to Forbes data updated on October 19, Thao’s wealth is estimated at $4.2 billion, ranking her 961st among the world’s billionaires. This marks the highest position ever achieved by a Vietnamese female billionaire. She remains Vietnam’s second-richest individual, following Pham Nhat Vuong of Vingroup.

Thao is a regular on Forbes’ global billionaire rankings and is the first and only Vietnamese woman to feature on the list. In mid-2025, Forbes also named her among the world’s 50 richest women, placing her 42nd.

Born in 1970 in Hanoi, Thao holds a Ph.D. in Economic Cybernetics and two bachelor’s degrees in Labor Economics Management and Credit Finance. Initially, she and her husband, Nguyen Thanh Hung, founded SOVICO Holdings in Russia, focusing on consumer goods, electronics, and apparel. Today, SOVICO is a leading Vietnamese conglomerate operating in aviation, finance, insurance, urban development, and renewable energy.
Upon returning to Vietnam, Thao co-founded and led two private banks, VIB and Techcombank, before investing in HDBank. In 2007, SOVICO Holdings, HDBank, and the T&C Group established Vietjet Air, a low-cost airline. Vietjet now operates 130 modern aircraft, 170 domestic and international routes, and has served over 250 million passengers. The airline recently announced new aircraft orders, ground handling automation, and secured a contract for the Long Thanh International Airport project.
The recent rally in VJC shares has pushed Vietjet’s market capitalization past 102 trillion VND, solidifying its position as one of HoSE’s most valuable private enterprises.
As Vietnam’s richest woman, Thao holds key roles in her three core businesses: Chairwoman of Vietjet, Vice Chairwoman of HDBank, and Chairwoman of Sovico Group.
She owns approximately 582 million HDB shares (16.6% of equity), valued at over 19 trillion VND. At Vietjet, she directly holds 47.4 million VJC shares (8.02% equity) and indirectly owns nearly 155 million shares (26.2% equity) through Sunny Investment Company, totaling over 202 million shares worth around 35 trillion VND.
