Vietnam ranks among the top 10 global producers and exporters of passion fruit, with 70-80% of its fresh and processed yield shipped to over 20 countries and territories. According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, over the past five years, Vietnam’s passion fruit output and export value have surged by 300%, placing it among the highest-earning fruits in the export market.
Last year, passion fruit exports exceeded $170 million. In the first eight months of this year, exports reached over $44 million, a 48% increase year-on-year. Meanwhile, processed passion fruit exports hit $126 million, up 34% from the same period last year.
With over 12,000 hectares dedicated to cultivation, Vietnam produces approximately 200,000 tons annually, harvesting up to three times per year. Eighty percent of the annual yield is purchased by companies for processing and export.
Vietnam is home to NaFoods, Asia’s leading passion fruit exporter, accounting for 10% of global production. As reported by Agriseco, NaFoods operates processing facilities in key growing regions nationwide, optimizing its supply chain. The company is deeply integrated into the value chain, supplying purple passion fruit seedlings. Its diverse processed product range is exported to over 70 countries.
Since July 2022, Vietnamese passion fruit has been pilot-exported to China, opening significant expansion opportunities. By April 2025, Vietnam signed a phytosanitary protocol with China, formally enabling official exports. In 2025, passion fruit is expected to enter the U.S. market. The Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association forecasts annual exports to the U.S. will reach $50-100 million. Prior to U.S. negotiations, Vietnam successfully exported passion fruit to Australia in August 2024, becoming the fifth fruit, after mangoes, longans, lychees, and dragon fruit, to gain official access to the Australian market.
Agricultural experts predict passion fruit will soon join the billion-dollar export club. Global demand for fresh purple passion fruit is high, and processed products like juices and syrups are gaining traction in multiple markets, providing stable income for farmers.
This year, exports of concentrated, frozen, and juice products are projected to reach $300 million, with fresh fruit potentially surpassing $500 million. Passion fruit, pineapple, and bananas are expected to achieve billion-dollar status soon, supported by strategic investments and expanded cultivation areas.
