The global spot gold price at 7:44 AM (Vietnam time) is trading at $4,240 per ounce, down 0.22% from last week’s closing level.

Previously, global gold prices fell over 2% on Friday after hitting a record high above $4,300 per ounce, pressured by a stronger U.S. dollar and President Donald Trump’s comment that a “comprehensive” tariff on China would be unsustainable.

The DXY index, measuring the dollar’s strength against six major currencies, rose 0.1%, making greenback-denominated gold more expensive.

Trump’s softer tone since his initial 100% tariff announcement has cooled precious metal markets. On Friday, he confirmed a meeting with China’s President, easing concerns about escalating trade tensions.

Despite Friday’s correction, global gold prices rose over 5.9% last week, marking the ninth consecutive weekly gain.

Gold, a traditional hedge against uncertainty, has surged over 64% this year due to geopolitical tensions, central bank purchases, dollar shifts, and inflows into large gold ETFs. Expectations of U.S. rate cuts also support its rise.

Suki Cooper, Standard Chartered’s global commodities research director, said: “We forecast gold to average $4,488 in 2026 and see further upside potential.”

Markets expect the Federal Reserve to cut rates by 25 basis points in October and again in December.

HSBC recently raised its 2025 average gold price forecast by $100 to $3,455 per ounce and expects gold to reach $5,000 by 2026.

Domestically, most major gold shops have yet to release their October 20 pricing.

Last week’s close saw SJC, PNJ, DOJI, Bao Tin Minh Chau, and Bao Tin Manh Hai lower their gold bar buying prices to 149 – 150.5 million VND per tael, with selling prices uniformly listed at 151 million VND per tael.

Ring gold prices also fell last week. SJC traded at 148 – 150.2 million VND per tael; PNJ listed at 148 – 151 million VND per tael; and DOJI at 149.5 – 150.9 million VND per tael.
