At the Chery Global Innovation Conference 2025 held in Wuhu, China, on October 18, Chery Automobile unveiled its first self-developed all-solid-state battery module, boasting an energy density of up to 600 Wh/kg—one of the highest levels ever announced by a Chinese automaker, according to CLS.

Developed by Chery’s Solid-State Battery Research Institute, the module utilizes an in-situ solid electrolyte system combined with lithium-rich manganese cathode materials. Chery claims the new battery can withstand extreme tests, such as being punctured by nails or damaged by electric drills, without catching fire or emitting smoke.

With its high energy density, electric vehicles equipped with this technology could travel over 1,500 km on a single charge, with a projected real-world range of approximately 1,300 km. Chery plans to begin testing in 2026 and commercialize the technology by 2027. If successful, Chery could outpace domestic competitors like BYD and CATL, which are also targeting small-scale solid-state battery production during the same timeframe.

The technology launch comes amid a strong business year for Chery. In September, the company exported 137,624 vehicles, a 26.2% increase year-over-year, marking the fifth consecutive month of exports exceeding 100,000 units. In the first half of 2025, Chery’s revenue reached 141.6 billion yuan (approximately $19.5 billion), up 26.3% from the previous year. Following a significant IPO in Hong Kong, 35% of the raised capital has been allocated to research and development (R&D), and 25% to next-generation technologies, underscoring a strong commitment to innovation in battery technology.

Chery’s breakthrough occurs amid a global race in solid-state battery development. Recently, Toyota partnered with Sumitomo Metal Mining to advance the production of cathode materials for fully solid-state batteries. According to EVTank, global solid-state battery production is expected to reach 614 GWh by 2030, accounting for over 10% of total battery output, with a market size surpassing 250 billion yuan ($34 billion).

In China, research groups like Tsinghua University have also made significant strides, developing a 604 Wh/kg soft-pack solid-state battery capable of withstanding temperatures up to 120°C. However, high production costs remain a major hurdle, as solid-state batteries are currently 2.8 times more expensive than conventional lithium-ion batteries due to costly sulfide materials and low manufacturing efficiency.

Chery’s announcement of a 600 Wh/kg solid-state battery module is thus a significant milestone, not only for the company but also for China’s electric vehicle industry. If successfully implemented, this technology could usher in a new era for long-range electric vehicles and solidify China’s leadership in next-generation battery technology.
