If you’re a fan of instant noodles, especially a die-hard enthusiast of Hao Hao, you might be intrigued by a “rumor” about the differences when purchasing this brand in the North and South of Vietnam. According to numerous social media users, the Hao Hao Spicy Sour Shrimp flavor—the most beloved variant—allegedly differs between the two regions, specifically in the seasoning packet.

Social Media Users Uncover Surprising Differences

The story began when a social media user shared that the seasoning packet in Hao Hao noodles bought in Ho Chi Minh City is green, while the same product purchased in Hanoi has a brown packet. Not only that, they claimed the flavors are noticeably distinct: “Southern noodles have a sweeter taste, while Northern ones are richer and slightly saltier.” This post quickly garnered thousands of comments.

To verify the “rumor,” two young individuals from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City collaborated to open packets of Hao Hao Spicy Sour Shrimp noodles and document the process. Indeed, upon opening, the first noticeable difference was evident: the seasoning packet in Ho Chi Minh City is green, while in Hanoi, it’s brown.

However, upon examining the production details, both packets list the same manufacturing location: Acecook Vietnam’s factory in Hung Yen. Thus, at least in terms of origin, there’s no significant difference as rumored.

What continues to spark discussion is the flavor. Despite both being labeled “Spicy Sour Shrimp,” many notice that Southern noodles have a milder sweet and sour taste, while Northern ones are spicier and saltier. This might seem odd at first but makes sense considering regional culinary preferences: Southerners favor sweetness, while Northerners prefer bolder, saltier flavors.

A Subtle Adjustment or Mere Coincidence?

Currently, the manufacturer has not officially addressed whether they adjust recipes based on regional preferences. However, many social media users believe that if there is a slight variation in seasoning to cater to local tastes, it’s a commendable touch.

One user commented: “If Hao Hao did this, it’s incredibly thoughtful, as Northerners and Southerners clearly have different palates, so a minor adjustment makes perfect sense.” Others speculate that the differences might stem from individual perception or variations in production batches.

And Hao Hao—Vietnam’s beloved national noodle brand—once again proves that, despite its simplicity, it can spark vibrant conversations across social media.
