On October 20, the Domestic Market Management and Development Department announced that the Siberian sturgeon from Duong Yen Cooperative (Lai Chau) is capturing the attention of consumers and visitors to Lai Chau. Weighing 50 kg, this sturgeon is the largest in fish farms across Lai Chau and Vietnam.

This product will be showcased during the 2025 Vietnam Agricultural Products Week, held from October 24 to 25 in Hanoi, highlighting the region’s efforts to promote the potential of northern mountainous aquaculture.

Representatives from Duong Yen Cooperative stated that Siberian sturgeon thrive only in cold-water environments, where temperatures are consistently maintained between 18-22°C. These ideal conditions ensure the fish’s meat is firm, delicately sweet, and rich in flavor.

Typically, it takes nearly two years for a sturgeon to reach an average weight of 2-3 kg.

Sturgeon Raised for 15 Years

To nurture this “giant” 50 kg sturgeon, Duong Yen Cooperative dedicated 15 years of meticulous care, treating it as a “treasure” of Lai Chau’s cold waters. This extraordinary sturgeon is set to be a unique highlight at the 2025 Vietnam Agricultural Products Week.

Ms. Tran Thi Thu Ha, Deputy Director of Duong Yen Cooperative, shared that all proceeds from the sale of the Siberian sturgeon at the 2025 Vietnam Agricultural Products Exhibition will be used to sustain, nurture, and breed Beluga sturgeon—a rare species with significant weight and high nutritional value. Notably, Beluga sturgeon eggs fetch millions of VND per tael.

According to the Domestic Market Management and Development Department’s leadership, the choice of sturgeon as the centerpiece of the 2025 Vietnam Agricultural Products Week is due not only to its essential nutritional value but also because the sturgeon has long been a symbol of prosperity, resilience, and abundance.
