50kg Siberian Sturgeon
The upcoming Vietnam Agricultural Products Week 2025, scheduled for October 24-25 in Hanoi, will spotlight a unique event: the auction of a massive 50kg Siberian sturgeon. This specimen, currently the largest in Lai Chau’s farms, will be more than just an exhibit—it’s set to be the star of a live auction.
The “Black Gold” of Northern Vietnam’s Highlands
Representing this extraordinary fish is the Duong Yen Cooperative, a leader in cold-water aquaculture with over 12 years of expertise. Annually, they supply over 20 tons of premium sturgeon to the market.
Achieving a weight of 50kg required 15 years of meticulous care—a remarkable feat compared to the typical 2-year growth period for a 2-3kg sturgeon. Thriving in Lai Chau’s cool waters (18-20°C), this sturgeon boasts exceptionally firm, sweet flesh, a hallmark of its superior quality.

Funding the Million-Dollar Caviar Dream
The auction’s proceeds will fuel an ambitious initiative. Tran Thi Thu Ha, Deputy Director of Duong Yen Cooperative, revealed that the funds will be reinvested in breeding the rare Beluga sturgeon—a species renowned for its colossal size and economic value.
Beluga sturgeon roe, known as Caviar, commands prices exceeding millions of Vietnamese dong per tael, making it one of the world’s most luxurious delicacies.

Duong Yen’s strategy epitomizes long-term vision: leveraging the sale of their flagship 15-year-old sturgeon to finance the expansion of Beluga genetics. This move aims to dominate the ultra-premium Caviar market, elevating Northern Vietnam’s aquaculture to unprecedented heights.
